Evidence-based practice (EBP) and research are often confused as interchangeable terms. However, they differ in significant ways. On the other hand, research is a systematic and rigorous process that aims to generate new knowledge or validate existing knowledge (Conner, 2014).

One way to differentiate evidence-based practice from research is through the focus of the intervention. Evidence-based interventions are aimed at improving patient outcomes in real-world clinical settings, while research interventions are typically aimed at testing hypotheses and theories (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).
