Economics The US government provided economic relief in the form of stimulus checks and loans to individuals and businesses. However, the healthcare system in the US has been strained due to a lack of resources and funding. The Canadian government provided financial support to individuals and businesses, as well as investing in the healthcare system to ensure sufficient resources and funding for pandemic response.
Social The pandemic highlighted existing social inequalities in the US, with marginalized communities bearing a disproportionate burden of the disease. Canada also faced disparities in COVID-19 outcomes, with Indigenous communities being disproportionately impacted. However, Canada’s universal healthcare system ensured that all individuals had access to healthcare, regardless of income or insurance status.
Healthcare The US healthcare system was overwhelmed by the pandemic, with shortages of personal protective equipment, hospital beds, and ventilators. The government also struggled to provide adequate testing and contact tracing. Canada’s healthcare system was better equipped to handle the pandemic, with sufficient resources and funding. However, the system faced challenges in providing care to individuals in remote and Indigenous communities.
Technology The US invested in the development of vaccines and therapies, and has led the world in vaccine distribution. Canada has been slower to distribute vaccines and has faced challenges in securing supplies.
Part 2: A Plan for Social Change

As a nurse leader, I would advocate for incorporating a global perspective into local practice by promoting the importance of understanding the social determinants of health and how they impact health outcomes on a global scale. This can be achieved through education and training for healthcare providers, as well as community outreach and engagement to raise awareness about global health issues.

Incorporating a global perspective would impact my local practice by helping me to better understand the diverse needs and experiences of my patients, and to develop culturally competent care that takes into account the social, economic, and political factors that contribute to health disparities.

Incorporating a global perspective into local practice represents and contributes to social change by promoting equity, justice, and human rights on a global scale. By recognizing the interconnectedness of health issues across borders, we can work together to address the root causes of health disparities and promote health and well-being for all. For example, by advocating for policies that support equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, we can help to reduce the global impact of the pandemic and ensure that all individuals have access to life-saving healthcare interventions.
