Violence and sexual assaults against Black women have been normalized due to systemic racism and sexism. Black women are often seen as hypersexualized and disposable, and their experiences of violence are often dismissed or ignored. This normalization is also perpetuated by a lack of representation and recognition of Black women in media and society as a whole.

The oppressive institutions of slavery and Jim Crow perpetuated this by creating a culture of violence against Black women. Black women were seen as property and were subjected to sexual violence by their white slave owners. Jim Crow laws continued this violence by allowing for the legal lynching and sexual assault of Black women without consequences for the perpetrators.

Unfortunately, the number of Black men killed by police is often more widely publicized than that of Black women and Black trans women. Some of the names of Black men who have been killed by police that are well-known include George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Philando Castile. However, there are also many Black women and Black trans women who have been killed by police or experienced police brutality, such as Sandra Bland, Atatiana Jefferson, and Tony McDade.

Yes, I did know that three Black women, two of whom identify as queer, started the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The three co-founders are Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi.

It is important to know who created social justice movements because it recognizes the work and leadership of marginalized communities who have often been erased from history. It also highlights the unique experiences and perspectives that these individuals bring to the movement, which can shape the direction and goals of the movement.

The experiences of queer and trans women are often forgotten in the #BLM movement because of a lack of understanding and recognition of intersectionality. The movement initially focused on police brutality against Black men, which left out the experiences of Black women and Black trans people. However, the movement has evolved to become more inclusive and intersectional, with a greater recognition of the ways in which different forms of oppression intersect and compound.
