Topic 1: Identification, parsing, reading and manipulation of the on-disk image in a file system
This project shall be focused on the creation and development of a program whose end product is an fsck utility that is rudimentary in nature and works well for the ext2 file system. The project will also explore the DOS-style partition tables which normally have four variables. It shall also give a detailed analysis on the translation of inode numbers into their equivalent number. Another important aspect of this project is the creation of a four pass tool that checks for specific errors in the system and relays the results for action. The project will be of utmost importance in the control of the available space in the disk storage system and the detection of any possible errors within the system hence preventing any possible loss of data.
Topic 2: Free block scheduling in disk firmware
This topic explores the application of free block scheduling as a possible replacement for the rotational latency delays within the disk drives of the system. For this to be achieved, a free block scheduler must be able to give an accurate prediction of the service to all the components of any given request within the disk. It is expected that the free block scheduler will be able to give about 15% of a disk’s potential bandwidth to a scanning task within the background of the system. The development of this system will be of great importance in system control ensuring that the available storage space has been utilized by the current running programs while at the same time ensuring that the background programs run efficiently.
Topic 3: Consistent distributed file updates
The purpose of this dissertation is come up with a clear strategy for the development of applications for mobile applications and distributed systems for storage of large data. In this case, the most appropriate platform to be used would be the android platform that works very well with mobile applications and distributed systems. A file sharing application whereby each mobile user will be able to keep a copy of a file and the updates received in each application will be synchronized shall be developed and implemented. The project will have two unique sections whereby the first one shall be responsible for service delivery while the second one shall be tasked with the implementation of the fully functioning system.
