Cavanaugh and Blanchard-Fields (2018) say that smoking, drinking too much, not being physically active, being depressed, being socially isolated, and thinking your health is fair or bad can all lead to disability as you age. If this is true, then non-government groups like friends, family, and church need to address these issues. But non-government groups need to know and understand their group and any possible socioeconomic factors that may be present before they can offer the right intervention and prevention programs (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2018). For example, it won’t help if a church tries to help a group of Muslims by giving them Christian help. Once the group’s social and economic factors are known, non-government groups can start to help.
Group physical activities are one way that a group that is not part of the government could help. This can be once a week or more often, like playing a sport or going on a light walk or hike with a group. This helps make sure that older people stay healthy and able to do their jobs, and it also prevents depression and social isolation. This can be done through a non-profit organization, a church, or even just a group of friends and/or family who get together often and do physical activities.
Another way that people outside of the government, especially family and friends, can help older people stay healthy and functional is by talking to them all the time in a kind and positive way. Scripture says, “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” (English Standard Version Bible, 2001, Proverbs 16:24). Kind conversation is good for both your spirit and your body. You can also use these talks to encourage the older person to keep a healthy lifestyle, stay active, and go to the doctor regularly. When friends and family talk to each other all the time and are kind, socioeconomic factors shouldn’t be much of a problem, if at all.
