Introduction
The US government appreciates that unborn babies are human beings. Abortion is a process of terminating the life of human beings who are yet in their mother’s womb. Supporters of abortion ignore that it is a form of murder of innocent souls. Abortion has long-term effects on a woman’s health, both mentally and in reproductive health. Women who have multiple abortions are at a higher risk of infertility or complications such as stillbirth. Other complications include preterm birth and low birthweight. Women who abort are at risk of mental illness, which triggers poor quality of life, regret, guilt, and suicide. Legalizing abortion is akin to demonstrating that human life is disposable. Preservation of life is an appreciation that life is sacred and only the giver of life should take it away. The purpose of the paper is to discuss pro-life arguments on abortion.
Pro-Life Argument
Killing another Human Being
Abortion is a medical procedure that terminates a pregnancy, according to Amnesty International. The definition does not appreciate that terminating a pregnancy comes with terminating a life. One of the issues that the people campaigning for abortion ignore is that it leads to the death of infants (Saadeh et al., 2021). Infants in their mother’s wombs have been created and given a sacred life. They are human beings who deserve protection. There is no difference between killing an infant or an adult or a one-day baby. Legalizing abortion is akin to demonstrating that human life is disposable (Saadeh et al., 2021). People will lose the value of life if it can be cut short within minutes without the justice system taking action. Taking another person’s life has been a criminal offense since the time in memorial. Historical records demonstrate that people who were killed would be stoned to death. Similarly, killing innocent children is an offense that requires strict action by the government to protect future generations.
The US government appreciates that unborn babies are human beings (Jacobs, 2021). One of the laws in the USA protecting unborn babies is the federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act. The federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act protects unborn babies by stipulating that people who injure or kill unborn babies should be punished (Scialabba, 2018). At least 38 states today have enacted and passed fetal laws to protect unborn children. The argument that abortion is a human right is a way of undoing the laws. Abortion is not a human right since pregnancy results from sexual activity. History shows that people who became influential in communities were born out of wedlock, while others were a result of rape. The incidences demonstrate that every child deserves a chance. If the mother does not feel they should support the child, it would be essential to put them up for adoption (Scialabba, 2018). People striving to get children desire to nurse the pregnancy to term. However, due to biological challenges, it results in miscarriage. Legalizing abortion takes away the joy of barren parents waiting to adopt a child.
One of the arguments for the people supporting abortion is that some women do not want to have a child. It is unthinkable that they went ahead to have sexual relations without minding the consequences (Rye & Underhill, 2020). In some cases, it would be justified if the mother faces a life-threatening condition that would end the life of the mother and the baby. It is important to note that majority of the people who support the law want to kill innocent souls aimlessly. Life is sacred, and only the giver of life should take it away (Rye & Underhill, 2020). For example, during the Covid-19, hospitals were trying their best to save people’s lives, despite their age, color, or religion. Similarly, the world should support the pro-life movement to preserve the lives of children (Rye & Underhill, 2020). If life were about choice, the sick people would choose to die, yet millions are in the hospital wishing to live one more day. The pro-choice movement is thus not an honest idea since it does not apply in real life. Women should take pride in giving birth to children who will transform this world. Pregnancy and nursing a baby should not be a burden but a privilege.
The people who support abortion do not comprehend that it is a form of murder. If their mothers carried out an abortion, they would not be alive today. It is fair to give every individual an opportunity to live on this earth (Saadeh et al., 2021). For instance, imagine the famous writers, architects, politicians, or judges and guess what would happen if their mothers chose to abort them. The world would be in a chaotic position without the impact and influence of wonderful people. It is important to appreciate that the world is not fair in stating that abortion is a health right. Abortion is a murder sentence against innocent souls who cannot speak for themselves (Saadeh et al., 2021). The people who can speak for themselves are the government, advocacy groups, and parents. Taking a stand to protect the lives of innocent children is a milestone in the world today.
Long-term Effects on Women’s Body
Abortion is a medical procedure that can affect a woman’s life and affect her fertility. One of the complications is that the procedure can damage the womb or cervix and affect the ability to conceive another pregnancy (Gebremedhin et al., 2018). Passing the law would undermine the fertility of millions of young girls. Another effect is that some procedures may be unsuccessful, leading to the mother’s death. Abortion can cause excessive bleeding, which is dangerous for a mother’s life (Gebremedhin et al., 2018). Incomplete abortion will require additional medical procedures to avoid complications in some cases. The effects on a woman’s health are not justifiable and cannot be compared to having a child.
Aborting a pregnancy affects future pregnancies. Some people involved in abortion report incidences of miscarriage, infertility, stillbirth, complications during pregnancy or birth, or ectopic pregnancy (Acharya & Liang, 2018). The effects are majorly among women who engage in abortion. Women with multiple abortions are at a higher risk of infertility or complications such as stillbirth (CompassCare, 2021). Other complications include preterm birth and low birthweight. The effects have a resounding effect on communities and the healthcare system (Acharya & Liang, 2018). Children with low birth weight are at risk of high mortality. The effects will burden the healthcare system in the future and place the mothers at risk of paying high medical costs. The low birthweight children may have abnormal features such as reduced cognitive functions.
The effect of abortion can undermine the relationship with a partner. Studies show that men whose partners committed an abortion reported regret, depression, and sadness. A study shows that 51 percent of the men reported regret while 25 percent were depressed (Akdag Topal & Terzioglu, 2019). Scientific findings demonstrate that abortion causes mental illnesses. The findings illustrate that human nature does not concur with abortion. Women who abort are likely to be isolated and remain less productive at the workplace. The effect triggers unstable marriages and can lead to breakup or violence (Akdag Topal & Terzioglu, 2019). Therefore, the effect of abortion does not stop at ending the pregnancy, but it continues to undermine a woman’s life in numerous ways. Studies show that women who abort experience a turnaround in their lives. The turnaround may affect their self-esteem and ability to pursue their life goals like before. The majority of the women with numerous abortion cases are sex workers (Akdag Topal & Terzioglu, 2019). The sex workers remember the many lives lost through their hands and end up hopeless. Legalizing abortion is a trap that undermines women, their careers, family, and personal goals.
Studies on abortion show that women who abort are at risk of breast cancer. The risk of breast cancer increases with the number of abortions. Estrogen, which is secreted in the first months of pregnancy, is a contributing factor to breast cancer (Patev & Hood, 2021). Women who abort leave their bodies at risk of the cancerous cells taking root in their bodies. Another argument is that abortion puts the breast cells at risk of mutation. The disruption of the normal biological processes during pregnancy affects the body (Patev & Hood, 2021). Although some research disputes that abortion causes breast cancer, other studies show that women with a history of abortion report higher incidences of breast cancer.
Permanent Damage To a Woman’s Mind
Abortion is a process that damages a woman’s mind and disrupts her peace. Women who engage in abortion are at a higher risk of depression, stress, and suicide. Women who abort are likely to report incidences of mental health such as trauma, depression, or stress (CompassCare, 2021). The adverse effects can ruin a woman’s life and affect her daily activities. In some cases, women who abort keep the memory of the child’s life they have terminated. The memories haunt them until they dive into depression. The traumatic memories can affect the woman to the point of causing suicide. Statistics indicate that women who commit abortion are 154% more likely to commit suicide than women without a history of abortion (Akdag Topal & Terzioglu, 2019). Some women go through remorse as they recount moments when they lost their child to abortion.
Post-abortion mental complications result in grief, regret, and guilt. One of the conditions diagnosed among women who undergo an abortion is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Jacob et al., 2019). The condition results in poor quality of life and inability to execute daily duties. While pro-choice movements promise freedom, the result is captivity of the mind. The mind is not free after ending the life of another person. In some cases, women who abort their babies are so concerned that they want to get pregnant again to replace the lost soul (Jacob et al., 2019). Confessions of women in counseling sessions reveal that they desire to get pregnant to cover up the guilt. The incidences create an unstable mind even after getting pregnant.
Legalizing abortion affects majorly the low-income and minority communities that have poor access to healthcare services. The women will attempt to have an abortion using crude tools to damage the reproductive system (Oberman, 2018). In some cases, the bleeding causes the death of both the mother and the child. In other cases, the surviving woman cannot have other children due to a damaged uterus or cervix. Health complications will emerge due to a lack of proper care for the women undergoing abortion (Oberman, 2018). Abortion will continue to create a gap between the rich and the poor. It will widen inequality and trigger more social and economic challenges.
Conclusion
Abortion is a medical procedure that terminates pregnancy and kills an innocent soul. The death of the child does not end without leaving devastating effects on the mother’s life. One of the issues raised about abortion is that it is a form of murder for an innocent child. Killing an innocent child demonstrates that life ceases to be sacred and that people can dispose of it at will. Women who abort experience mental challenges due to a sense of guilt, depression, and stress. Post-traumatic stress disorder is one of the results that trigger symptoms that impair a mother’s quality of life. Abortion is one of the significant causes of suicide among women who feel worthless for taking a child’s life. The process of abortion leaves a mother in poor health and at risk of medical complications. Women with multiple abortion incidences are at a higher risk of infertility or complications such as stillbirth, low birth weight, and ectopic pregnancy. In some cases, women develop a high risk of breast cancer due to breast cell mutation. The adverse effects on women’s health are not freedom or a human right, but it is an opportunity to undermine women in society.
