Electric Power Protection

Electric Power Protection
Assignment Instructions
Reminder: All work turned in for this class must prepared in a form that I can open with Microsoft Word 2016. Do not copy the homework text into your answers; I already know what the questions are, and putting superfluous filler into your answers just makes more work for me.

For this assignment and any others that require research you must answer in your own words and cite your references correctly. A cut-and-paste answer will earn a zero for the entire assignment and may earn a course grade of F for plagiarism.

Part 1: Acme Corporation operates a small server room. They work 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, five days a week, and can operate for several hours without IT services. However, part of their IT application includes a database system that is sensitive to interruption; it must be shut down properly to avoid corruption. They’re based in Tampa; frequent thunderstorms cause brief power “blips.” Complete power failures are rare, but do happen two or three times a year and last for several hours. Describe what Acme should do with respect to electric power protection.

Part 2: MidCorp is a mid-sized corporation that sells music and movie downloads over the Internet. They’re in the same building as Acme and have the same electric power conditions. MidCorp’s CFO that each hour of web server downtime costs the company $2,000 in profit from sales. Describe what MidCorp should do with respect to electric power protection. If your recommendation is different from Acme’s, explain why. Explicitly state any assumptions you have made.

Part 3: Using the cost-benefit analysis method described in the lecture, estimate how much money MidCorp should spend on power protection. You will have to make several assumptions to do this. Your answer should contain an “assumptions” section in which you list them. Justify each assumption in one or two sentences.

Part 4: Bruce Schneier says one should consider the following things when considering implementing a security system:

What assets are you trying to protect?
What are the risks to those assets?
How well does the proposed solution mitigate those risks?
What other risks might the proposed solution cause?
What are the costs and trade-offs of the proposed solution?
Assume your cousin lives with a spouse, a pre-teen daughter and a teenage son. Your cousin has asked for advice on whether to install a monitored burglar alarm in their home. What advice do you give? You do not have to find out the cost of burglar alarm systems for this assignment, but address all the rest of Schneier’s considerations.

Part 5: The president of Acme Corporation has just learned that the company can be held responsible for what employees write in electronic mail. He is very worried! Acme has a long-standing, but unwritten, practice that brief personal phone calls are permitted at work, so long as they do not interfere with performance. The company president would like to treat email the same way.

In a couple of paragraphs, explain how personal phone calls and personal email messages are alike.

In a couple of more paragraphs, explain how they are different.

Write a draft policy for personal use of Acme’s email system. (You don’t need the standards and practices for this one, just the policy. Remember, policies state what must happen, may happen, or must not happen. This can be as short as a couple of paragraphs, but a sentence or too will not do.)
Part 1:
A blackout can have very many negative consequences on a company where data can be lost or corrupted while various products and services can also be lost. For this reason, it is very important that Acme Corporation establishes the right electric power protection measures for its small server room. Electrical surges are probably one of the leading causes of equipment damages occurring from a power interruption and these damages tend to occur during and after an electric power interruption. For this reason, there is need for Acme Corporation to install a surge protection device at its premises. By installing this device, Acme Corporation will be able to minimize the risks that might result from any unexpected power surges. In addition, an uninterruptible power supplies is also required at Acme Corporation as it will help the company protect its database system which is very sensitive to power interruption. Having uninterruptible power supply system in place will allow ACME Corporation shut down its database system properly thus avoiding its corruption.
Another measure that Acme Corporation might consider undertaking is adopting the right insurance policy. Although measures like installing a surge protection device works to minimize the risks associated with power damages, sometimes electrical damages can still occur. With the right insurance policy in place, Acme Corporation would receive compensation for any damages resulting from unexpected damages from electrical surges.
Part 2
Like Acme Corporation, MidCorp should also ensure that there is a surge protection device at it premises to caution against the damages that might result from unexpected power surges. In addition, an uninterruptible power supply system should also be put in place to allow Midcorp shut down its database system properly thus avoiding its corruption. However, these measures alone are not enough given the fact that MidCorp’s web server downtime usually cost the company an average of $2,000 in profit due to the nature of its business. For this reason, a backup generator will be required as this will help prevent any unplanned downtimes that might result from unexpected power surges.
While Acme Corporation can continue with operations for several hours without having to rely on any IT services, MidCorp doesn’t have this luxury because its web server downtime usually cost the company an average of $2,000 in profit due to the nature of its business. For this reason, a backup generator may not be a necessity at Acme Corporation but it is an inventible requirement at Midcrop to help prevent any unplanned downtimes that might result from unexpected power surges.
Part 3
On average, Midcorp should look to expend around $ 2,500 on power protection. Majority of this expense goes to the purchase of a reliable alternative power generator which cost around $2,000 which an uninterrupted power source will cost $250 on average. The other $250 should cover for installation charges on both devices. The assumption made is that the two devices and installations will be installed with the current market charges.
Part 4
In this case, it would advise my cousin to go ahead and install the monitored burglar alarm in his home because his trying to protect very important assets which are his home and family. The risks to these assets is that intruders can make away with some of his home valuable as well as disturb his peace while in extreme cases it could result in some of his family members being harmed in the process. With a monitored burglar alarm in place, my cousin will be able to detect any attempted intrusions early enough before they can occur so that appropriate action can be done in good time before the intruder can cause any harm. The only challenge with a monitored burglar alarm is that sometimes it can give false signals but that would not be a major issue compared to the risks and harm that would result from a successful burglary attempt. The cost of this proposed solution is that my cousin will have to put up with some extra expenditure to maintain this monitored burglar alarm which I would consider justified given the benefits that comes with having this system in place.
Part 5
Personal emails and personal phone calls are alike in the sense that they involve private communication of an employee. For this reason, they should be given the respect they deserve by ensuring that they are treated the same and not interfered with. As long as the time spent over the phone and email is not too much, I think that Acme Corporation to treat the two the same is justified.
The difference existing between a personal phone and email are that while a phone call involves instant communication, emails may take longer response time. In addition, email conversations are more prone to cyber security risks compared to a phone call which has very minimal chances of data security risks. As such, emails should be handled with more care to avoid the numerous risks that comes with cyber security threats.
Acme’s Email System Policy
Corporate emails play an important role in helping employee perform their duties accordingly. While employees have the freedom to use their personal emails while at work, there are certain policy guidelines that must be adhered to.
Today emails are one of the mediums cyber criminals use to find entries for launching an attack in any organization, a factor that means email security is very important. As such employees must:
1. Use strong passwords on their emails that can’t be easily predicted
2. Avoid sharing the company’s sensitive or confidential information over personal emails.
3. If possible, employees are encouraged to memorize their email passwords instead of writing them down on a piece of paper because they can be easily stolen.
4. Avoid opening suspicious links and attachments
5. This policy guideline should be adhered to at all times.
