The Three Measles Prevention Levels and Resource Allocation

There are three levels of prevention used to reduce the incidences of measles in the world. These stages are primary, secondary and tertiary. The primary prevention of measles is by immunization of uninfected individuals with a live virus vaccine. In the U.S, for instance, the first measles vaccination is given at age 12 months and the subsequent one at any age between four and six years. Moreover, the international travelers of age six months or older must receive two doses of vaccines for measles, regardless of their destination. Statistical reports of vaccination show that 95% and 99% of those who have received a single and a double dose respectively are protected. In other countries, the measles-containing vaccines are issued at ages that the local government recommends.
Secondary prevention of measles involves controlling the spread of the disease by immunizing individuals who are already exposed, strengthening measles immunization programs in the incident areas, and isolating patients from predisposed individuals. Immunoglobulin is administered to exposed people within the first five days of exposure to prevent the disease. If the measles-containing vaccine is otherwise given later, the disease is not likely to be prevented but modified. Vitamin A reduces morbidity in the developing countries.
In the case that the primary and secondary prevention of measles is not properly handled, there are various complications likely to arise; for instance, permanent disability or even death. Tertiary prevention aims to reduce the complications by patient rehabilitation, disability prevention, severity and acute/chronic complication reduction, et cetera. Rehabilitation should be in such a manner that a patient does not feel ignored.
The primary prevention level receives the most attention as well as resource allocation from the government. Every country focuses a lot in the measles vaccination program for children so that little resources can be directed to the few cases of infections and exposure. Dealing with a disease is hard than preventing it. Allocation of funds in vaccination on measles significantly reduces the mortality due to the disease itself.
