For the first weeks discussion I’ve chosen to talk about the movie Dances With Wolves. The screenplay was written by Michael Blake and released in 1990. This movie stars Kevin Costner, as Lieutenant John Dunbar as well as Mary McDonnell and Graham Greene. This is a considerably long movie with a run time of three hours and one minute , but has won multiple oscars and was weirdly one of my favorite movies as a kid.
Lieutenant John Dunbar is given a choice of any new assignment after being heroically victorious in battle in 1863. He makes the decision to travel to the frontier before it becomes civilized. Dunbar’s whereabouts are unknown to the army due to unfortunate events, and he is completely alone. He meets a wolf in the plains who follows him around and ends up naming the wolf two socks. When Dunbar returns an injured tribes girl to the camp, a nearby Comanche tribe takes an interest in the new neighbor. Dunbar basically begins hanging out with the tribe, learning the language and exchanging gifts. The tribe becomes ecstatic after Dunbar’s buffalo hunt goes exceptionally well, and he abandons all army duties to fully embrace the Comanche way of life. When one of the tribesmen saw Dunbar and his wolf pal playing a game, they decided to name him “dances with wolves.” The Pawnee tribe went to attack the Comanche tribe, but with the help of Dunbar and his weapons, they were able to win, and Dunbar is hailed as a hero. Dunbar attempts to return to his old camp to retrieve an incriminating journal but is apprehended by army soldiers at the checkpoint. They try to take him back east for execution, but his new tribe saves him, kills some soldiers, and flees. 150 words are required.
