If you agree with a classmate, explain why, give an example, share what you learned in the readings, ask questions of each other, etc.As a nurse performing a health assessment on a newborn infant and finding out the mother is reluctant to breastfeed her baby, I would first want to gather more information on why she feels this way. Was she not exposed to breastfeeding, is she fearful, is it due to religious beliefs or does she simply not have enough information about it. It is important to assess all of this information prior to educating and assess the mother’s willingness to learn. After gaining an understanding on why the mother does not want to breastfeed then I would start by educating her on the benefits of breastfeeding. Babies can digest breastmilk more easily than formula and breastmilk contains all the nutrients and antibodies needed for a newborn (“Why breastfeed,” 2016). If the mother is still reluctant to breastfeeding, then formula would be provided and my next step would be to educate her on the how often and how much the baby should drink. Reassuring moms that formula will still provide the nutrients and calories a baby needs is important. Nurses should never be judgmental about a mother’s decision to breastfeed or not and nurses should be supportive to whatever decision the mother makes.
