FINAL PROJECT
For your final project, you will work independently to create an RCR training program for a
specific research enterprise. Below is a list of components that must be addressed in your
proposal. I have provided some guidance on the length of each section, but you may
allocate more or less space to a given section as you see fit. The entire proposal must not
exceed 20 pages in length, double spaced, including references and appendices. The page
lengths below should be reduced if you plan to move some content to appendices.
1. Description of the research enterprise (~ 1-2 pages). Describe the enterprise – Ph.D granting
university; liberal arts college; medical school; research institute or center – that reflects the
population of interest. Your target population should not be too narrow nor too large.
Please seek approval on your research enterprise early in the semester, before you begin
developing your program.
2. Outline the major components of your training program (~ 8-11 pages). These include:
o The topic areas to be covered by the training, and a rationale for including or
excluding specific topics
o The information covered in each topic area
o The methods by which training will be delivered, e.g., workshops or workshop series;
on-line tutorials; classroom/lab-based instruction; etc.
o How you will solicit participants and ensure compliance with training requirements
3. Describe the general procedures you will use to evaluate the effectiveness of RCR training (~
3-5 pages). These include:
o The content tapped by any surveys or questionnaires (knowledge, attitudes,
behavioral intentions)
o How surveys or questionnaires will be administered (in person, on-line)
o Any individual-level or aggregate behavioral data that will be collected (role-play
outcomes, mentoring behaviors, institution-documented incidence of research
misconduct or other demonstrable detrimental research practices)
4. References (~ 1-2 pages)
o Include a list of scientific or journalistic references that were consulted in
preparation for this project. (Do not cite instructor PowerPoint slides.)
