My paper focuses on immigrants or specific indigenous Americans, cultural identity and their people. It provides a historical and ethnographic overview of the specific group focusing to achieve a better understanding of its identity and history. The paper will discuss on Inuit in Alaska. In addition, it will explain the ethnicity of Inuit in relations to socioeconomic conditions prevailing in the US.
Dr. Barbara is a lecturer in the social anthropology department at Cambridge University. Currently, she involves herself in environmental projects in Mexico. She is a studies director of Anthropology and Archeology, Sociology, Psychology, and Political Studies. Barbra’s article displays a relation with the Inuit group that stretches back 30 years back. It studies how Inuit work and lives in Alaska and their interaction with the environment physically, socially and politically. The article looks into the community’s perception and adaptation to the changes of the environment as they keep on working towards making their lives (Barbara). Close interaction with the group, greatly aided her gather substantial information of the group as well as experience. She highly recommends on being realistic in life, which can be explained by her modest in obtaining actual information of a social group, such as the Inuits.
Yvon Csonka is a teacher of ethnology at Greenland University. After studying in Quebec and Paris and traveling severally to the North, he was made the president of sciences association. He is working on the social sciences currently and particularly on migrations (Yvon). Beyond some stereotypes marked as opposites of oral and written, myth and history, actually knows not much about Inuit history. The article discusses the history senses of Inuit as they appear today; where interest of historical consciousness and question is limited hereby having no progress. Instead, the changes should be viewed as paralleling the latest sharp changes in societies’, identities, and worldviews. The differences between Nunavut and Alaska histories may attribute to the fact that the vision of today against the old one diversity of colonization history involved.
Dan is an associate journalist with the local news station in Alaska. Dan mainly writes on the culture of Alaskans and their interaction with the environment (Dan,). The news journal explains the hunting patterns of the Inuits in Alaska. In this article, he advocates for the preservation of the Alaskan culture as they are part of it from adaptation. It states the preference of the Inuit as hunters. Dan discusses the animals’ window when they are exposed to the Inuits for hunting. The Inuits have a specific time of hunting when their targets migrate. The weather in Alaska goes to the extreme and that is the reason why the animals move at specific times. The present environment is in transition and the Inuit who believe in the culture, want measures to be in place to protect it. The Inuit according to Dan, require policies that can protect their environment and food. The article explains that the food consumed in Alaska mostly comes from other places as they want to protect their environment. According to this article, the food of the Alaskans are highly nutritive and that is the reason why they are healthy. There has been pollution of the Arctic by organizations and this is causing disruptions in their trends and culture. The behavior is an interference with the Alaskan culture.
