For decades, human sex trafficking has become prevalent, affecting thousands of girls and women worldwide. Most victims of human sex trafficking and children under the age of eighteen. Traffickers target minors because they are vulnerable compared to adults (Hopper, 2017). The brutal reality of human trafficking has affected many people leading to physical and psychological disorders. The paper is an assessment of Human Sex Trafficking on Victims that could cause criminality.
Kimberly and Carol, victims of human sex trafficking could potentially face psychological or mental disorders that could lead to criminality, such as juvenile delinquency. For example, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia. The psychological disorders are very common among survivors where most end up attempting suicide and engaging in self-harm (Hopper, 2017). Schizophrenia and psychotic disorder have been reported in most cases affecting the victim and the families. Victims who have schizophrenia refuse to take medication, attempt suicide and engage in aggressive behaviors. Violent behavior is caused by delusion and restraints, resulting to juvenile deliquency. Complex trauma is caused by physical abuse, which develops into psychosis and schizophrenia.
Victims of human sex trafficking tend to lose trust towards their family, such as, ending up having feelings of social degradation. Having a social degradation feeling makes the victims feel less of human and ends up being violent to people as a defense mechanism (Hopper, 2017).For example, Kimberly and Carol may undergo low-self esteem and may feel unwanted due to their involvement in sexual activities. Victims of human sex trafficking are at risk of interpersonal violence caused by reduced decision-making ability and increased dependency. Also, the victims suffer from hopelessness, sadness, inexplicable crying and confusion.
The victims go through stress-related disorders, such as irritability, anger, denial, exhaustion and mood changes. Stress, somatization, and psychosomatic symptoms psychologically affect the victim, leading to sudden criminal behaviors, such as murder (Fedina, Williamson, and Perdue, 2019). The victim’s fear of rejection, obsession and fear of being alone drives them into criminality, such as murder and homicide at a young age. The victims go through attachment issues brought about by trauma bonds, which may end up driving the victim into crimes of passion.
Victims of sexual abuse face polyvictimization, a combination of sexual abuse, physical abuse and other forms of abuse. The impact of polyvictimization is powerful and damages the victims’ capability to reason and make informed decisions. Additionally, the victims undergo re-victimization after going back to society (Fedina, Williamson, and Perdue, 2019). The fear of social victimization prevents victims from going back to their homes and communities. Lack of support from parents and friends leads to unemployment, poverty, and migration. Lack of employment forces the victims to engage in criminal activities to earn a living. For instance, theft, organized crime, drug abuse and trafficking.
Human sex trafficking victims go through psychological disorders/issues leading to criminality. Treatment and counseling are very important to avoid prolonged cases of psychological disorder. The long history of poly victimization, schizophrenia, delusion, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder can be treated by developing physical and psychological safety. Trauma-specific intervention could help the victims regain their mental stability, for example, offering educational support addressing interpersonal connection and resiliency. Additionally, the victims can receive moral support, psychotherapies, and address trauma bonding to avoid crime engagement. Lastly, human sex trafficking victims should be rehabilitated instead of incarcerated for treatment and psychological intervention.
