In the case of Williams v. Lee of is one among the many Supreme court landmark cases. lee operates a general store in the state of Arizona hewer he gives out goods on credits. the store is under a federal license on the Navajo Indian reservation however lee is not a native American thus were living under reservation on the Navajo Indian reservation. lee sued Williams for failure of non-payment in a state court. The court entered a judgment in favor of lee. The Arizona supreme court affirmed the trials court judgment. However, William filed a motion to dismiss the suit the cases claiming that it was only proper if the case as heard in the tubal court
Justice Hugo black had a unanimous decision where he held that the state court of Arizona has unfairly exercised jurisdictions. Moreover, the state courts did not have power to regulate affairs or native American on the reservation. Notably, the Navajo courts of Indian offense obligated to conduct suits by outsiders against native American defendants. Therefore , the court dismissed the motion entered by William and enter a judgement in favor of lee fooling the Supreme Court affirmation where the state courts ere given the right to civil duties of both the native and non-native Americans even for suits that were committed in the reservation for essence the failure of William to pay for the goods that he had taken on credit.,. therefore, the court as held that Navajo treaty to control the jurisdiction and reservation of the Navajo Indian reservation. Thus, the Supreme court granted certoriari.it as concluded that the judgment as reverse allowing the tribal court to exercise authority of matters that occurred in the reservation as per the provision of the treaty.
