Machine-type communication (MTC) assumes an essential role in mobile networks by showing its adequacy in terms of creating noteworthy incomes for administrators of the mobile network. Additionally, MTC has turned into a major paradigm for emerging technologies and services for communication including drones, robots, IoT connected devices, and industrial automation. With the capabilities that MTC holds, it requires a significant model change that will enable it to adapt to the 5G network technology improvement to be able to enforce different necessities regarding innovation empowerment, increasing availability, latency, and reliability aspects. Therefore, for the MTC to incorporate the 5G network technology, the mission-critical MTC (mcMTC) approached is required. However, the mcMTC is still in its early-institutionalization period of 5G network technology, which requires more research to be undertaken to improve its operation (Berndtsson, Hansson, Olsson, & Lundel, 2008). The importance for mcMTC investigation proposal includes establishing how the 5G network would enhance development in the market segment, how providers of mobile network will have the capacity to enhance customer experience, the possible extensive opportunities provided by mcMTC in 5G network technology, and challenges that MTC continues to face regarding H2H communication.
The mcMTC investigation proposal is supported by the literature review in various ways. The literature review provides technical issues, recent advances, and key requirements that would see the mcMTC potential being utilized by companies and organizations in the communication field. It also provides an investigation on how the next generation of cellular networks should be designed to satisfy the mcMTC requirements, critical review of mcMTC challenges in the 5G wireless technology context, and flexibility options required to support mcMTC various use cases that have different requirements in terms of reliability, latency, and availability (Mohammed, Mansoor, and Ahmad, 2019). In support of the research problem, the literature review provides an overview of MTC in 4G systems’ current status providing perspective towards the incorporation of 5G mobile systems in the MTC (Shariatmadari, et al., 2015). The potential diverse attacks that face the wireless communication systems including the mcMTC are also provided including passive attacks such as eavesdropping and traffic analysis, and active attacks such as replay attacks and masquerade attacks (Ambekar, Karrenbauer, and Schotten, 2017). The literature also supports the problem statement by providing a discussion of how the 5G network plays a significant role as an enabler of advanced distributed SE schemes, and 5G enhancements for distributed information acquisition and processing in smart grids (Cosovic, et al., 2017). Lastly, to support the research problem statement, the literature review explores 5G ultra-reliable communication (URC) features that help in providing a certain level of communication (Shariatmadari, Uusitalo, Iraji & Jäntti, 2016).
The research methodologies in support of the problem statement include the application theory of quantitative research, whereby synchronized Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are deployed to measure voltage accurately and current phasors at a high sampling rate (Rengasamy, 2016). The data analysis method such as graphical and variables are used in analyzing the ability of the 5G network in supporting different MTC in service delivery by network operators. Qualitative methodology is also used to gather data concerning security issues related to mcMTC through interviews and survey methods.Therefore, the literature review and the mixed methodology are able to provide the needed support to the problem statement in the research topic.
