Juvenile probation remains the best option when dealing with underage offenders. Underage offenders in most cases commit less serious crimes than their older counterparts. Dealing with this through probation provides the offenders with necessary supervision under the watchful eye of correctional officers in controlled scenarios in which their freedoms are limited. The advantages associated with the juveniles can carry on with their normal social activities such as going to school, be with their peers and family without having to incur the harsh realities of incarceration. They also have access to psychological counselling, rehabilitation for drug and substance abuse and specialized care where applicable. The structure and routine of reporting to their probation officers and checkup up by them aids in their rehabilitative process. It is also not a burden to the state/country as compared to incarceration as the offenders are taught life skills and can proceed with their formal education if they choose so. This provides a relief to state as all expenses are from the guardian’s side.
There are however some setbacks when dealing with juvenile probations in the juvenile justice system. This may include; some juveniles who spend time in honing their ‘skills’ as they go on their various activities. This kind of offender simply doesn’t care about the consequences of their actions. Sometimes the offenders may be shunned by their peers as those around them may deem them a negative influence. This can lead to negative feelings such as those of resentment to their peers and may even lead to depression.
In summary my opinion of the main use of juvenile probation is to act as a deterrent rather than a means of punishment to the offenders.
