Academic integrity and professional ethics are fundamental pillars of nursing education and practice. The relationship between academic integrity and writing is intrinsic, as scholarly writing serves as a primary medium for demonstrating knowledge, critical thinking, and ethical conduct in academic settings. When nurses engage in academic writing, they are expected to present original ideas, cite sources accurately, and avoid plagiarism. These practices not only uphold academic standards but also cultivate habits of honesty and accountability that are essential in professional nursing practice (Devine & Chin, 2018).

The connection between professional practices and scholarly ethics extends beyond the classroom into clinical settings. Nurses are entrusted with sensitive patient information and must make critical decisions that impact patient care. The ethical principles learned and practiced in academic work, such as honesty, transparency, and respect for intellectual property, directly translate to professional conduct. For instance, accurate documentation in patient records, proper attribution of ideas in research or quality improvement projects, and ethical decision-making in patient care all stem from the foundation of integrity established in academic work (Glasper, 2020).

Step 2: Summary of Analysis

In approaching the identification and analysis of peer-reviewed research, I began by defining my topic of interest: the impact of nurse-led telehealth interventions on chronic disease management. I then utilized academic databases such as PubMed and CINAHL to search for relevant, recent publications. My search strategy involved using keywords such as “telehealth,” “nurse-led interventions,” and “chronic disease management,” along with Boolean operators to refine the results.

Two strategies I found particularly effective in finding peer-reviewed research were: 1) using the “cited by” feature to identify more recent articles that have referenced seminal works in the field, and 2) reviewing the reference lists of highly relevant articles to find additional sources. These approaches allowed me to discover a network of interconnected research and gain a more comprehensive understanding of the topic.

In the future, I intend to use the Cochrane Library as a resource for finding high-quality, systematic reviews related to nursing practice and telehealth interventions. This resource will provide access to evidence-based summaries that can inform both my academic work and clinical practice decisions.

Module 6 | Part 4: Finalizing the Plan

Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties

The two nursing specialties I have considered are Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP). Both specialties offer advanced practice roles but differ in their focus and practice settings.

The Family Nurse Practitioner specialty prepares graduates to provide primary care across the lifespan, from infants to older adults. FNPs work in various settings, including clinics, private practices, and community health centers. They focus on health promotion, disease prevention, and management of acute and chronic conditions. FNPs have a broad scope of practice, allowing them to serve as primary care providers for entire families.

In contrast, the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner specialty focuses on the care of adult and older adult patients with complex, acute, critical, and chronic health conditions. AGACNPs typically work in hospital settings, including emergency departments, intensive care units, and specialty clinics. They manage patients with unstable, chronic, complex acute, and critical conditions, often using high-tech interventions.

A significant differentiator between these specialties is the patient population and acuity level. While FNPs work with a diverse age range in primarily outpatient settings, AGACNPs specialize in adult and geriatric patients in acute care environments. The decision between these specialties often depends on one’s interest in either broad, longitudinal patient care or high-acuity, specialized care.

Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty

After careful consideration and feedback from colleagues, I have chosen to pursue the Family Nurse Practitioner specialty. This decision aligns with my passion for providing comprehensive, patient-centered care across the lifespan. The FNP role offers the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients and families, which I find particularly rewarding. Additionally, the broad scope of practice will allow me to address a wide range of health concerns and work in diverse settings, including underserved communities where primary care providers are in high demand. The holistic approach to patient care and emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention in the FNP role resonates with my personal philosophy of nursing and my career goals.

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is a professional organization closely related to the Family Nurse Practitioner specialty. To become a member of AANP, I can follow these steps:
