Introduction
‘Syrian refugees’ is a term that is used to refer to people who used to live in Syria but have fled the country due civil war that begun in 2011(UNHCR 1 “Syrian Refugee response”). These people fled the country due to fear of being killed in the war. A large number of homes have been destroyed in the civil war which has now lasted for over 5 years. The UNHCR estimates that there is close to 5 million Syrian refuges that are now seeking refuge in various countries and over 6 million who have been forced to leave their homes but are still in Syria. A large number of Syrian refugees have fled to neighboring countries such as Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. This paper will look into the role of these countries in helping and sheltering Syrian refugees. The paper will focus on the humanitarian Helpance that these countries have offered these refugees (UNHCR 1 “Syrian Refugee response”).
General Information about Syrian Refugees
The UN estimated that there were nearly 5million Syrian refugees in February of this year. Due to various reasons including the available means of transport, culture and religion among others, a large percentage of these refugees are in countries neighboring Syria. Slightly over two million of Syrian refugees are in Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, and Egypt. Turkey has the largest number of Syrian refugees: the UNHCR estimates that their number is about 2.7 million. Germany on the other hand has a high number of Syrian refugees while North Africa has about 28000 people (UNHCR 2 “Syrian Refugee response”). Greece and Macedonia also have Syrian refugees who are said to have entered these countries to transit to Western Europe.
As seen in the above paragraph, countries neighboring Syria have received and continue to host the highest numbers of Syrian refugees. These are Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Turkey. Lebanon lacks official refugee camps. Therefore, many refugees live in sub-standard shelters such as tents and garages. Lebanon has however taken up a step to reintroduce all Syrian children in schools. The number of Syrian children in Lebanon is almost equal to that of school going Lebanese children. For this reason, the schools have introduced a double shift system where Lebanese children, are taught in French and English languages in the first shift while Syrian Children are taught in Arabic in the second shift. Non-Governmental Organizations in Lebanon provides shelter Helpance to the most vulnerable refugees. This has benefited close to 126,000 of the most vulnerable of groups (UNHCR 2 “Syria Emergency Shelter”). Syrian refugees in Lebanon live in dire housing conditions as seen in the beginning of this paragraph. In addition to standard humanitarian Helpance offered, refugees are offered counseling and legal Helpance mainly to the survivors of violence (UNHCR 4 “Syria Emergency NFI”).
By the end of 2015, Jordan hosted 1.3 million Syrian refugees: a large percentage of these refugees live in the northern part of Jordan. More than 83 percent of the refugees who flee to this country live in urban settings (UNHCR 9 “Cash Helpance Dashboard”). A good percentage of Syrian refugees have relatives in Jordan and crossed the boarders to live with relatives. These were easily integrated in Jordan. For other refugees Humanitarian Helpance is therefore offered to the most vulnerable by the government, various Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and UNHCR (UNHCR 9 “Cash Helpance Dashboard”). Among the most prominent NGO is the Islamic Relief that is more active in the northern Jordan. Jordan has refugee camps unlike Lebanon, for this reason, refugees can have better standards in terms of shelter food, health and sanitation. Since 2012, the number of refugees who crossed into Jordan exceeded what the local people could easily assimilate, which lead to establishment of refugee camps and other facilities. Refugee camps in Jordan include Zaatari and Azraq refugee camps among others (UNHCR 2 “Cash Helpance Dashboard”).
Turkey now holds the largest number of refugees in the world. These refugees come from Syria and Iraq. The government and NGOs channel their Helpance to the vulnerable refugees streaming in from Syria. Priority is given to refugees who, for various reasons have not been accommodated in refugee camps (UNHCR 4 “Syria Emergency Shelter”). These refugees with poor living conditions and without access to food, health care, protection as well as electronic vouchers which refugees use to buy food and items, are given preferential treatment. Many Syrians refugees in Turkey do not receive education and are hence likely to be a lost generation. This is because such people might not be able to effectively contribute in the reconstruction of Syria after the war is over. Turkey has constructed many refugee camps within its borders and another one recently constructed at the boarders with Syria for Syrians fleeing conflict in Aleppo in January before the current ceasefire was introduced.
Many of Syrian refugees are also housed in camps in the government controlled areas of Iraq. They are provided with food, sanitation, healthcare and winter clothing. However, Iraq is very strained due to the fact that it has many people displaced by the Islamic State and the US-led invasion of 2003.
Conclusion
As seen throughout the paper, Syrian neighbors have played a crucial role in Helping Syrian refugees. These countries have played a major role in educating refugees as seen in Jordan, providing shelter, food and health services. Some of refugees have also been integrated in communities living close to Syrian border as seen in Jordan. Some of these countries have constructed camps and makeshift health facilities to help refugees.
