Introduction
YouTube is an American video-sharing site with its key headquarters in California. The video-sharing service was developed in February 2005. The site usually allows for the users to Help in uploading, viewing, rating, sharing, and commenting, and the subscribing to other platform users. The platform offers wide range of user-created and corporate site videos. YouTube has brought about significant innovation and creativity in the society influencing technological improvement. The advent of YouTube evolution has had significant impact on the social, cultural, religious, political, and commercial aspect. YouTube has been a successful innovation because of the various reasons. Google has invested significantly in ensuring that YouTube forms a key cultural artefact in the modern society (Simon, 2016). Since joining the internet in 2015 and its later acquisition by Google in 2006, YouTube platform has been useful in promoting online journalism, introduction of independent content creators, and the launching of careers of social media celebrities. As a result, the report will seek to evaluate the convergence of YouTube and culture that inspires cultural development and media developments in the UAE.
Social and Cultural Aspects
In terms of social and cultural impact, Fagerjord (2009) determines YouTube as a site that integrates media production and the distribution of the social networking characteristics that makes it an ideal platform for creating, connecting, circulation, and collaborating of critical ideas. The platform works well in encouraging users to become influencers, communicators and media creators and thus, eliminating the exclusivity of social-cultural roles from the main media entities and reputable personalities. The social and cultural influence of YouTube is mainly focused on benefits the site offers to the individual users and public. The benefits are possible due to the good positioning of YouTube as a tool for promoting participatory culture.
As a cultural tool, YouTube helps to describe culture and societal aspect of its users. A basic Assessment would indicate that YouTube represents both the growing popularity of the information age and the emergence of a new participatory culture in the current internet age. Based on neologism, culture is a situation whereby private persons and collective public directly takes part in production and creation. It is different to consumer culture that individuals and public usually acts as simple consumers. In his article, Simon (2016) indicated that YouTube was critical in enhancing the popularity of the Arab Spring in 2010 as it acts as a platform for informing the world and thus, it is able to supplement how the protesters uses the social media sites to organize their activities and coordinate and the recruitment of the members. Kutchinsky (2017) also indicated that the social media networking platforms offers activists with an opportunity to reach to the wider new audiences through critical appeals.
From a social perspective, YouTube has been criticized for having negative impacts on most audience. For example, some videos might frighten numerous children who often have more views. Young children will tend to watch videos repeatedly and they might be vulnerable to the behavior indicated in the content including sexual or violent behavior. Particular content creators in the platforms uses algorithm to help them in gaining more views as they endanger the safety of the viewers. YouTube has had significant social benefits in promoting cultural enrichment and sharing of ideas.
Political and Institutional Aspect
YouTube has also provided a platform for young people to deal with serious issues facing the Arab youths including politics and corruption. YouTube comedians have been able to address the concerns of corruption and unemployment in the society. Considering the diverse approach between the digital channels and the mainstream news media, YouTube has provided an opportunity for young people to express their ideas and information. In 2013, a court in the UAE sentenced eight persons to one-year prison-term for the uploading a mock documentary video on “gangsta culture” of teens in the UAE (Kutchinsky, 2017). The government indicated that the video was a defamation to the larger society in the UAE. The court cited a law passed in 2012 that prohibited the use of technology to endanger security in the nation. The Human Rights Group indicated that the legal case exposed the nation’s problems to restrictive laws and regulations. Apart from government restrictions.
In the UAE, women activists were able to push for their rights to drive through online social activism programs. The online social movements are critical in allowing people to share their opinions and fight for their rights. The platform offers a flexible venue for all social activism programs. According to Hellyer (2013), numerous studies have recorded the problems that comes along from obtaining internet information, more so social media sites such as YouTube. YouTube allows for an open-access platform for sharing false content. Young people in the UAE been able to actively engage in political discourse through YouTube platform. This includes challenging key regulations and procedures instituted by the government.
Religious Aspect
In the UAE, YouTube and other social media sites have been blamed for the deterioration of religious values and authority in the modern Arab society. Even though some of the persons are using social media to promote religious expansion and understanding, the negative implications of social media on religious growth is worrying. Most of the young Arabs are inclined towards seeking information from YouTube site, which often might be false. The Arab world has experienced serious revolution creating potential limitations and restrictions to spread quality religious information and data. According to Ostrow (2009), YouTube has both negative and positive impacts on religion in the UAE, but the benefits of the social media sites outweighs the negatives.
Commercial, Economic and Market Influences
From a commercial perspective, YouTube has become an instrumental tool for marketing and promoting products and services. Global brands are now using YouTube ads as a way of reaching to a wider audience and customer base. It is possible for brands to build a strong brand image through the YouTube platform in an effective way. While the platform has become an innovative platform in technology and entertainment sector, it has created numerous opportunities for the development of profitable entities. According to Ostrow (2009), more than 100,000 persons were employed in Asia through the creation of YouTube content. In the UAE, many youths have found an opportunity to create online content that promotes their personalities and brand as strategic marketing partners for companies in the UAE. Therefore, YouTube is inspiring economic and commercial growth in the UAE economy and globally as well as it inspires the creation of new business and opportunities.
Dominant Trends/Patterns of Content Creation
Content creation has involved significantly over the last 18 years. In 1993, the first content creation tool to surface was the e-book. The e-book was a critical guide for internet and allowed for corporations to develop content and present the content to the wider audience. In 2000, the e-book become more popular allowing marketers to interact with potential customers. In 1998, blogging emerged as a new tool for creating content in the internet. Blogging was recognized after a journalist wrote a report on the influence of blogging in the society. By year 2001, individuals started creating articles and later bloggers were writing opinion articles that were recognized as reliable content to make mainstream news.
In 2003, it marks the year of social media boom when MySpace was started. But, it was later surpassed by Facebook, which become the most popular media sites. In 2006, YouTube site was created to allow people upload and share content through videos and documentaries (Fagerjord, 2009). However, today, the inception of Instagram and twitter to allow for the creation of content in a more valuable manner. The rapid evolution of content creation through the social media sites has been critical in influencing social, cultural, and commercial impacts.
YouTube changed Culture in the UAE
In the UAE, YouTube does not have a good reputation due to its flexibility and ability to allow to any form of materials to be posted in the platform. A UAE-located dentist, Jaafar is a popular YouTube star who has been recognized for her ability improve the unity of the Arab cultures through the impersonation of diverse regional accents in her YouTube channel. She created the channel to focus on boosting understanding and empathy through her videos. Recently, YouTube has faced numerous challenges from government experts and policy makers (Hellyer, 2013). The platform has been repeated criticized on its inability to timely remove offensive information and videos posted on the side. However, YouTube was able to invest in improving the responsiveness to potential harmful content in the platform.
In spite of all, Jaafar’s videos have helped to save their image in the UAE as she is able to unity the diverse region in the Middle East region. In her videos, Jaafar uses the varied cultures, mimicking diverse Arabic accents from the different nations promoting cultural unity. As content creation platform, YouTube has been able to change how people socialize and relate with each other in the UAE region (Hellyer, 2013). YouTube has worked well in spreading culture and enhancing love amongst the people. However, the efforts to promote the spreading of the culture in the UAE faces serious barriers and threats. For example, YouTubers such as Jaafar has been criticized for their role in reinforcing certain cultural stereotypes in the UAE.
Conclusion
In summary, YouTube is an influential social media platform that has evolved the approach of content creation and development in the modern society. The efforts to create new content through YouTube has had significant impact on the UAE culture. The integration of culture and social media, more so YouTube has disrupted the way of living in the UAE society. In addition, YouTube has also serious economic, commercial, and political impact on the UAE society. The platforms have helped to create new stars who earn their livelihoods through the platform. However, its social and cultural influence has been resounding to shift the focus of the UAE society. The online social movements are critical in allowing people to share their opinions and fight for their rights. The platform offers a flexible venue for all social activism programs. In spite of all, YouTube faced serious problems as a tool for promoting participatory culture in the UAE.
