2-3 page Reflective Writing Assignment

Reflective Writing Assignment
HDFS 1060 – Spring 2019

During the semester, you will complete a 2-3 page reflective writing assignment relating to topics covered in class. The writing assignment will be worth 50 points.
For your reflective writing assignment, you first will choose a chapter that interests you. Sign up for that chapter on HuskyCT by February 4 at midnight. Once you have chosen a chapter, find at least two topics within that chapter that you would like to reflect on. For example, if I chose the chapter on Stresses and Strains, I might choose the topics of jealousy and lying/deception in relationships. Your topics can be as broad or as specific as you like, as long as they are contained somewhere in the chapter that you have chosen (or were talked about in the lectures in class for that chapter). The two topics don’t have to receive exactly equal time, but each should receive enough attention to adequately reflect your thoughts on the subject. As such, each topic probably should be discussed in your paper for about 1-1 ½ pages (i.e., do not talk about one topic for 1 ¾ pages and the second topic for 2 sentences; ideally, you’ve chosen these topics because you have something to say about both of them). Although you can choose more than two, please make sure that however many you choose, each topic you choose is adequately discussed (i.e., don’t choose 10 topics and talk about each for a couple of sentences).
Once you have chosen your topics, then as the title of the assignment suggests, I want you to reflect on those topics. By this I mean you should discuss your personal opinions, thoughts, experiences, etc. Some questions you might use as a guide for your reflection include:
• Have you personally experienced the subject being discussed? Has a relationship you’ve been in been affected by or demonstrated the subject being discussed? What happened? How did you react to it? How has it affected you?
• Have other people you’ve known experienced it? How did it affect them? Did it indirectly affect you in some way?
• What are your thoughts about the subject? Do you agree or disagree with what we learned in class? Do you think your thoughts are similar to or different from other people your age? How about your parents? Grandparents?
• Did you learn something new about the subject that you didn’t know before? Has what we learned in class changed your thinking on the subject somehow?
These are not questions that you have to discuss in your reflection, but simply are suggestions to help you get started. The important thing is that this paper should focus on your thoughts and experiences, or those of people close to you that have impacted you in some way. This should not simply be a summary of what the textbook has to say about the topics. Please also do not discuss fictional characters from TV shows or movies. These should be real life applications of the topics. Assignments that contain no personal reflections will receive a 0. Assignments that are mostly summary also will have points deducted accordingly. I know what the book has to say about the subjects, so don’t repeat it for me. It will be clear if you understand it by what you say and use as your examples. This is an opportunity to take the material we have discussed in class and apply it to your own life.

Formatting
In terms of formatting, each paper should be approximately 2-3 pages long, double-spaced, using 1-inch margins and either Arial 11 or TNR 12 font. DO NOT PLAY WITH THE FONT, MARGINS, OR SPACING TO MAKE IT FIT WITHIN THE PAGE LIMITS. I have read enough papers that it is immediately obvious and you will still lose points for improper formatting. It is ok if papers are slightly (a few lines) over the page guidelines, but do not go under 2 pages, and don’t use a “fluff” summary paragraph or headers or other gimmicks to make it two pages. You should have enough to say if the topics truly interest you. If it’s more than 3 pages, you will lose points for being too long (I have 330 of these to read – there have to be limits).
Please also note that, although this is not a “writing class,” your assignments still are expected to be coherent, grammatically correct, and free of spelling errors and typos. Please proofread your assignments. And by proofread, I do mean actually read them, not just spell/grammar-check them. Microsoft cant catch all you’re errs, as ewe ken sea.  (And know you no how hard its four me to reed righting like that, two). Points will be taken off if there are excessive grammatical or spelling mistakes. Please also keep in mind that this is a class assignment, not a text message or an IM. As such, I expect you to use proper and appropriate vocabulary. It is a personal reflection, so you should be using the first person throughout your paper. The Writing Center is available if you would like Helpance with your writing: www.writingcenter.uconn.edu
Due Dates:
To make sure you have the opportunity to include anything we discuss in class in your reflections, reflections generally will be due the day AFTER we finish covering the corresponding module in class (with an exception for exam days). All papers are due by the end of class (11:00 a.m.) on the due date.
Module 3 – February 11
Module 4 – February 15
Module 5 – February 20
Module 6 – February 27
Module 7 – March 6
Module 8 – March 25
Module 9 – April 5
Module 10 – April 10
Module 11 – April 15
Module 12 – April 22
Module 13 – April 29
Module 14 – May 3

Late assignments will be docked 5 points per 24 hours that they are late; the late clock starts at 11:01 a.m. on the day they are due. Papers will not be accepted more than 4 calendar days past their due date, because they can’t get a passing grade.

Papers should be submitted in hard copy in class. DO NOT email me your paper. Getting that many emails results in UConn email addresses being marked as spam, which as you can imagine, is not helpful.

A (Very) Few Words on Academic Integrity:
Although this should be obvious, these are not group projects and should reflect your individual work. I realize people in the class are friends and might discuss the same people or events, but given that people are signing up for different chapters and probably will choose different topics within those chapters and certainly should have unique personal thoughts about those topics, I would be very surprised to see papers with reflections on similar topics. So keep it simple; do your own work.
