CMC 4623 Communication Theory
CSA Brief- Media Analysis Research
CSA Type:
A Coursework Research Paper

CSA Brief:
Students in this class are required to write a media analysis research paper using the theoretical knowledge they gained from this class and applying it to a real media case/event. Students will choose an event, a problem or an issue that is receiving/has received major media coverage either locally or internationally. Students are encouraged to examine issues that have/had local, regional, and international media coverage.

They must choose a communication theory and appropriate methodology of data collection that they believe applies particularly well to the issue. Students will use the theory to describe and explain why the issue is/was covered in a certain way based on scholarly data collection and predict/analyze the media coverage. Finally, students will evaluate the theory in terms of how well it works and give an assessment of its validity.

Students will write their media analysis papers focusing on at least one of the mass communication theories discussed in class. In some cases, more than one theory helps provide stronger analysis. In such cases, students can use a maximum of two theories only.

In their papers, students are expected to;
• Provide an introduction and thesis statement that clearly identifies the purpose of the research project (introduction w/thesis statement);
• Describe the media event/case they chose and provide a discussion of the landscape of scholarly research in this area (literature review) that result in one or more appropriate and comprehensive research questions that will guide the study.
• Explain the importance and relationship of at least one specific communication theory to the investigatory process of the research project (theoretical underpinning) and justify the method of data collection employed (methodology).
• Analyze the data collected and discuss the findings from the research (analysis/findings).
• Discuss the importance and impact of the data analysis and overall research project; obstacles and successes of the investigation; and point readers to the next steps in the contribution of the project to scholarship (discussion).
• Provide a conclusion that summarizes this research process and its findings, and moves the reader to action.

Students are expected to use primary and secondary scholarly resources to support their research and should format the paper in APA Style.

Rationale:
This course introduces students to various theories of communication. Understanding how to apply these theories in our communication activities is key to personal and professional success. The assignment helps students apply theoretical concepts to practical cases in order to develop stronger critical analysis skills and more effective communication analysis.

Media Analysis Research
Introduction
During the period of 2016 to 2017, international and domestic media organizations including CNN & Al Arabiya have been reporting on the Syrian refugee kids’ health challenges and crisis. The media organizations have the ultimate responsibility to report on health crisis and other matters of public importance. CNN has made effort to provide a comprehensive coverage on the specific Syrian refugee kids health crisis. The media reports is keen on highlighting on the conflict and international responses towards to health crisis facing children in Syria. The media organizations have reported widely that the Syrian refugee children are faced by numerous educational and health risks in both the refugee camps and even after resettling in new countries. Migration Policy Institute determined that over 300 Syrian refugee children are always facing mental health problems (Kherallah, et al., 2012). Syrian refugee children face higher risks of mental health challenges and limited access to quality education. It is the responsibility and duty of CNN& Al Arabiya to engage with the Syrian refugees’ children health challenge and identify the key health crisis, which can be prevented for new generation of Syrian refuges. The media organizations are expected to inform the public on new diseases which could affect people in living in poor neighborhoods and the lack of quality health care.

Keywords: Syria, conflict, healthcare, refuges, crisis, access to healthcare, kids, children, diseases, war in Syria, Syria health, children in Syria, refugee camps, Hungary Syrian, and children right.
Media Event and related Literature Review
CNN and Al-Arabiya have been covering a key media event, which are the health crisis facing Syrian refugee children due to the civil war in Syria. Acute malnutrition in the world among children is a key indicator of the nutritional status and position in the humanitarian emergency actions. The humanitarian agencies rely on the acute malnutrition measurement to determine the right action and Helpance that needs to be provided to improve the health of children in certain region. The media coverage of this crisis is paramount as it seeks to show the children refugees problems and a call for action to improve the health crisis facing the children. The civil war in Syria has gave rise to more than 2.5 million refugees who fled Syria going to other neighboring including Turkey, and Jordan among others (Coutts, & Fouad, 2013). The Syrian refugees lack quality housing and access to nutritious foods. Such situation exposes the children to health conditions including mental health problems.
According to Kherallah, et al. (2012), a cross-sectional survey done on Zaatari camp and other refugees determined there is a high prevalence of anemia among children and women. The research findings recommended the needed to come up with effective nutrition policies to ascertain to improve the overall child and maternal nutrition status through dealing with underlying risks on health outcomes. One of the key actions recommendable is to support a national fortification initiative that ensures that all refugees have access to floor products and sustaining access to health care programs focused on improving sanitation and reduction of health risks that leads to improved nutritional status.
Wearmouth (2017) explains that the Syrian children are facing serious mental health challenges due to experiences of sexual abuse, pain, and violence. After getting to safety, the children would start suffering from mental health. Mental health among children would come up from the adverse experiences suffered in the civil war and tough situations while travelling away from Syria. Young children claimed to have witnessed people being killed and slaughtered by ISIS. According to El-Khatib, Scales, Vearey and Forsberg (2013), young children starting from six years are fighting serious mental problems and conditions including depression, PTSD, and toxic stress. Without proper treatment, the children would be suffering adversely in their adulthood. The demand level for the health care services is significant. It is clear that close to 44% of the Syrian children are indicating signs of depression and the remaining are suffering from adverse PSTD. The need for psychological intervention and measures is imperative to address these social actions and programs.
Research study by Sen, Al-Faisal and AlSaleh (2012) highlights that refugee children were exposed to PTSD and they also faced the risks of suffering from emotional problems including aggression and other affective disorders. Mental health conditions have longstanding negative implications for the young children. The children usually suffer from depression and PTSD. Children suffering from the mental health condition shave a difficulty in obtaining proper measures and ways to cope with the conditions. These mental health challenges are costly to the society. Persons suffering from the mental health conditions are expected to have huge resources in the school facilities and in the transition to work and adult life. Continued mental health problems have the ability to limit the educational access and the potential employability of the refugee children as they grow up (Al-Nuaimi, et al., 2018). Limited Syria’s recovery efforts would create a challenge for the children with the health problems. CNN should invest more resources in highlighting the long-term consequences of failing to address the mental health crisis facing refugee children.
Similarly, children who lack proper education and awareness often feel marginalized. The media organization should dedicate more coverage and resources in showing the need to help the vulnerable children from the mental health challenges. Education challenges are also responsible for the increased level of mental health issues and problems (Hassan, et al., 2016). However, the international community initiatives have failed to handle the children refugee crisis for a while. The lost opportunities in addressing the health crisis in the Syria show the lack of proper commitment to improve the health situation of the refugee children. CNN and Al-Arabiya have the main responsibility and obligation to ensure proper actions is taken in addressing social problems and health concerns such as the increased health risks for the children in Syria.
The Syria war has led to numerous challenges on the health situation in the society. Proper measures and actions needs to be taken in shaping the need to improve health outcomes. The neglecting of refugee children increases the risks of civil unrest for the future generation. Young girls end up suffering from early marriages, sexual assaults, and thus, suffering from serious depression and other mental health challenges. The long-term problems associated with Syria children to serious health conditions and thus, inhibiting the rebuilding of Syria from the potential conflicts. There is a serious danger for the new generation of Syrian refugees growing while facing the serious mental health issues (Sirin, & Rogers-Sirin, 2015). The mental health issues should be resolved to ensure that the adulthood of the Syrian refugee children is resolved to improve good health.
Research Framework and Communication Theory
Agenda setting theory is a significant way of explaining the media and its ability to take on serious issues in the society. The theory of agenda setting includes two key elements including information and awareness. The researchers reviewed the implications of agenda-setting perspective of the mass media program that seeks to evaluate the relationship between the voters of one community and the comprehensive content of the mass media program and campaigns applied during the media processes. The researchers were able to determine the influence of mass media on the voters that is seen as a key concern in addressing social issues such as highlighting the Syria children health crisis.
Agenda setting model involves the development of public concerns and awareness of the key details by the news organizations. The theory assumes that the media does not reflect reality and they only shapes it. It also assumes that media concentrates on few issues that public would perceive to be of public significance. In Syria and Arab world, the Syria children health crisis has been an issue of public importance as it leads to serious mental health challenges and problems. One of the main aspects in the agenda-setting purpose of mass communication is the key time frame for this model. The diverse media have diverse agenda-setting potentials. The theory remains relevant in helping to understand the dynamic role of the mass media.
Agenda setting model is critical in improving the efforts to shape the public and policy agenda in the world through personal experience and interpersonal engagements with the various stakeholders. Based on the agenda-setting model, the theory will collect data through the various methods including the content analysis and the interviews of the individuals. The core focus of the research theory is awareness and information. The research study should rely on two models to obtain research information on the Syria children health crisis. In the countries facing civil war including Syria, it is necessary to come up with proper actions in promoting social change, democratic communication, and political development. In addressing health crisis facing mental health crisis, the agenda setting theory is effective in providing specialized communication process. The model is also effective in promoting international development initiatives and projects.
There is a strong relationship between the agenda setting theory and CNN’s obligation to report Syrian refugee children health crisis. The communication model is focused on ensuring that proper actions are taken in improving how the organizations creates awareness and communicates with each other to improve long-term measures to address the mental health crisis facing the Syrian refuge children. The theoretical perspective is that the media organizations should work with the society in pushing for ideologies and programs that are geared towards promoting development and growth.
The research methodology used is the quantitative research method that involves the use of available numbers and statistics to determine the implication of health crisis for the new generation of the Syrian refugees. The quantitative research methodology was appropriate and seeks to show the actual figures and situation in Syria. The design of the research method is critical in shaping and improving the development communication model (Abbott, 2016). The only way to determine whether the development communication has improved the situation on the health crisis is through the access to the actual numbers and figures on children facing health crisis. For example, the information on the number of children suffering from malnutrition is significant and effective in creating awareness and pushing for action against mental health crisis.
Research Analysis/Findings
The research data and information collected for the research includes the specific findings from the various studies. According to Bilukha et al. (2014), the data collected from Zaatari camp for the last 10 days hosted 327 children aged 6 to 59 months among children. The research question sought to determine the prevalence level for global acute malnutrition for the children living in the camp. The research study determined that prevalence was low. However, the prevalence for suffering from chronic malnutrition was higher in outside camp compared to Zaatari camp. A nutrition survey also determined that anemia prevalence was high among the people living outside the company. The core research findings determined that the acute malnutrition level is low among the Syrian refugee population.
However, the prevalence for anemia and malnutrition was higher among children refugees living in the outside camps rather than Zaatari camp. Zaatari camp has improved health and nutrition conditions and thus, making the prevalence for suffering for malnutrition and other health conditions low. Wearmouth (2017) determined that 79% of the Syrian children had experienced a death in their family. 60% of the Syrian children had been physically hurt or beaten, and 25% of the psychosomatic pain. Based on the data collected, it is clear that the refugee Syrian children are facing difficulties situation and conditions that exposes them to severe mental health problems. Without proper intervention, the research findings show that the Syrian children will have difficult adulthood due to the exposure to violence and adverse environment while growing up.
Handling mental health crisis and problems facing the children will be effective. Media organizations including CNN and Al-Arabiya should contact the children and their parents to get the full stories on the actions that should be taken in resolving the mental health crisis among the refugee children in Syria. Al-Arabiya has not been providing a good media coverage to highlight the health crisis facing Syrian Kids’ due to the commitment and lack of mission to highlight social ills (Syrian refugees, n.d). The Middle East Media needs to devote more resources on highlighting the core health problems facing the Syria kids. When the media stops highlighting such health risks, it allows the growth of the health problem. Proper health interventions and actions needs to be put in improving proper health care actions.
Some of the key obstacles towards investigating the key research issues is the lack of proper access to the camps whether the refugees children are located. The media organizations are usually unable to get access into the camps and facilities whereby the refugee children and their parents are located. Some of the refugee camps are unsecure and do not proper access to resources. Limited resources including finances and human capacity also proves a challenge in investigating the health situation facing the Syrian Refugee children in the refugee camps. The new organizations could hire few personnel who will be responsible for evaluating the core research findings and outcomes. However, the inability to get additional resources and human personnel is would restrict the overall research outcomes. Enhanced investment in employees would help in improving the research investigation into the core issues.
Some of the successes of the media investigation into the Syria situation is the ability to work with suffering children to highlight their research problems associated with health status of the Syrian refugee children. The investigation is also successful because they have strong support from the government and other key organizations. Getting support from international organizations makes the investigative process ease and successful. The research findings make important contributions to the future research on the importance of media organization in determining the key issues facing the society (Children of Syria, n.d). The media organizations often operate as profit organizations. However, the research study calls for future studies to determine the social responsibility and obligation of the media organization in highlight key social ills. The need to understand whether the media organization should be bound to commit resources is critical in the review of core research elements and findings.
Data Analysis
In the overall media analysis project, data analysis is critical in improving transformation and the remodeling of the data to achieve certain goals and objectives. For the research project, the quantitative data analysis is effective in seeking to interpret the actual figures. The high prevalence for suffering from mental health conditions is a clear indication of the increased risks for the children from suffering from mental health problems (Fazel, & Betancourt, 2017). The Assessment of the quantitative data and information helps in understanding the actual issues facing the people in the society. The Syrian child refugees need more action and intervention to control and improve on their situation in the camps and external countries.
The data analysis process also helps the media organizations including CNN and Al-Arabiya to determine the key insights and information that needs to be highlighted towards the address the core issues facing the Syrian children. CNN has a team of data analysis experts that is involved in evaluating the core issues in the society towards dealing with mental health issues. Putting more efforts on addressing health condition issues is effective and ensuring relevant control and reporting on the health challenges and crisis (Kherallah, et al., 2012). The children in Syria and their parents are also expecting that the media highlights their problem. However, the media organization will need to have proper findings and information. Data analysis will make it possible to obtain the raw data and representations to improve the long-term situation through reporting the plights of the Syrian health crisis.
In difficulties, the media organizations are expected to work with the government and other stakeholders in the collection and review of the key figures and data to improve proper decision making. Making recommendations at the media organizations are also depends on the available research figures and data. The data analysis aspect is core in the review of the important insights related to Syrian children health status. After data analysis, the actual health status of the Syrian refugees can be determined effectively. CNN& Al Arabiya can increase awareness on the health crisis through working with the key involved stakeholders. The media organizations should also develop team for data analysis who will work with health officials in reporting on the important statistics (Quosh, Eloul, & Ajlani, 2013). Reporting on the critical health statistics is effective and helps in improving long-term health interventions.
Conclusion
In summary, media organizations including CNN and Al-Arabiya have the main responsibility and obligation to ensure proper actions is taken in addressing social problems and health concerns such as the increased health risks for the children in Syria. The Syria war has led to numerous challenges on the health situation in the society. Proper measures and actions needs to be taken in shaping the need to improve health outcomes. There are a positive relationship between the development communication theory and CNN’s obligation to report Syrian refugee children health crisis. The communication model is focused on ensuring that proper actions are taken in improving how the organizations creates awareness and communicates with each other to improve long-term measures to address the mental health crisis. CNN& Al Arabiya can increase awareness on the health crisis through working with the key involved stakeholders. The media organizations should also develop team for data analysis who will work with health officials in reporting on the important statistics. Most importantly, Al-Arabiya has failed to provide good media coverage to show the health crisis facing Syrian Kids’ because of the lack of proper commitment to highlight social ills. The Middle East Media needs to devote more resources on highlighting the core health problems facing the Syria kids.
