However, in group and family therapy, this is precisely what the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner does. In your role, learning how to provide this type of therapy within the limits of confidentiality is essential. For this Discussion, consider how limited confidentiality and other legal and ethical considerations might impact therapeutic approaches for clients in group and family therapy.

Legal and ethical considerations for group and family therapy differ from those for individual therapy in several ways. First, in group and family therapy, the therapist has a responsibility to protect the confidentiality of all group members, even if the information is shared by one member. This can be difficult to do, as group members may be tempted to share personal information with each other that they would not share with a therapist in individual therapy. The therapist must be careful to create a safe and confidential environment for group members, and to remind them of the importance of confidentiality at the beginning of each session.

Second, in group and family therapy, the therapist must be aware of the potential for conflict between group members. This is because group members may have different needs and goals, and they may disagree about how to achieve those goals. The therapist must be able to manage conflict in a way that is respectful of all group members, and that does not harm the therapeutic process.

Third, in group and family therapy, the therapist must be aware of the potential for transference and countertransference.
