CASE STUDY: Family Member with Alzheimer’s Disease:
Mark and Jacqueline Mark and Jacqueline have been married for 30 years. They have grown children who live in another state. Jacqueline’s mother has moved in with the couple because she has Alzheimer’s disease. Jacqueline is an only child and always promised her mother that she would care for her in her old age. Her mother is unaware of her surroundings and often calls out for her daughter Jackie when Jacqueline is in the room. Jacqueline reassures her mother that she is there to help, but to no avail.
Jacqueline is unable to visit her children on holidays because she must attend to her mother’s daily needs. She is reluctant to visit friends or even go out to a movie because of her mother’s care needs or because she is too tired. Even though she has eliminated most leisure activities with Mark, Jacqueline goes to bed at night with many of her caregiving tasks unfinished. She tries to visit with her mother during the day, but her mother rejects any contact with her daughter. Planning for the upcoming holidays seems impossible to Mark, because of his wife’s inability to focus on anything except her mother’s care.
Jacqueline has difficulty sleeping at night and is unable to discuss plans even a few days in advance. She is unable to visit friends and is reluctant to have friends visit because of the unpredictable behavior of her mother and her need to attend to the daily care.
Reflective Questions
1. How do you think this situation reflects Jacqueline’s sense of role performance?
2. How do you think that Jacqueline may be contributing to her own health?
______________________
Jacqueline’s situation reflects a significant impact on her sense of role performance. As a caregiver to her mother with Alzheimer’s disease, Jacqueline has taken on the responsibility of fulfilling her promise to care for her in her old age. However, the demands of caregiving have taken a toll on her ability to fulfill other roles in her life. She is unable to visit her children on holidays, misses out on leisure activities with her husband, and has difficulty making plans or focusing on anything other than her mother’s care. Jacqueline’s inability to balance her caregiving responsibilities with other aspects of her life indicates a sense of role strain and the challenges she faces in meeting multiple role expectations (Brook, 2018).
Jacqueline may be contributing to her own health issues through the following ways:
a) Neglecting self-care: Jacqueline’s primary focus is on her mother’s care, and she has eliminated most leisure activities and personal time with her husband. This neglect of self-care can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, as well as increased stress levels. By not taking care of her own needs, Jacqueline is putting her own health at risk (American Psychological Association, 2020).
b) Sleep disturbances: Jacqueline experiences difficulty sleeping at night, which can have a detrimental effect on her overall health. Lack of adequate sleep can lead to fatigue, cognitive impairment, mood disturbances, and reduced immune function (National Sleep Foundation, n.d.). Her inability to discuss plans in advance may also contribute to anxiety and further disrupt her sleep patterns.
c) Social isolation: Jacqueline’s reluctance to visit friends or have friends visit due to her mother’s unpredictable behavior and caregiving demands isolates her from social support networks. Social isolation can negatively impact mental health, increase feelings of loneliness, and hinder access to resources that can provide Helpance and respite (Holt-Lunstad et al., 2015).
d) Emotional well-being: The emotional burden of witnessing her mother’s decline and experiencing rejection when attempting to connect with her mother takes a toll on Jacqueline’s emotional well-being. The stress, frustration, and sadness associated with caregiving can contribute to increased risk of depression, anxiety, and caregiver burnout (National Institute on Aging, 2021).
It is crucial for Jacqueline to recognize the impact of her caregiving role on her own health and well-being. Seeking support from family, friends, or support groups, as well as exploring respite care options, can help alleviate some of the burdens she faces and provide her with the opportunity to prioritize her own health needs.
