Learning outcomes to be assessed • Master complex data analysis, including performing statistical analysis and data interpretation
• Deploy high-quality academic writing skills to report results of laboratory investigations in a concise and appropriate scientific manner
• Critically analyse the importance of assay development and quality control in laboratory testing
Aim of assessment
The aim of this assignment is to engage with recording, analysis and interpretation of scientific data. At the same time it will help you improve your academic writing skills.
MD7002 Final submission: 4th March 2022, 14:00 (UK time)
Written Laboratory Report (3000 words)
Data:
Pipetting, dilution and protein assay data were collected from all students on the 17th of January during the practical session. The Excel file with the student database can be found in the MD7002 Moodle space under the Assessment tile below Assessment 1.
You should use these data to complete your Assessment statistical analysis.
Tab 1 “Pipetting” contains the weights database, Tab 2 “Dilutions” contains the dilutions database in the form of absorbance and Tab 3 “Protein Assay” contains the standard curve and unknown protein database in the form of absorbance.
Please scroll to your right to obtain all data triplicates.
Assessment Document:
Your report should include the following sections: introduction, results, discussion, reference list. You do not need to include a methods section in your report.
Introduction
Your introduction should provide some key background information for the reader. You should briefly describe the scenario you worked on Day 3 and introduce the aim(s) of the report. You do not need to provide information on Day 2 activities. The introduction should be supported by reference to relevant literature.
Results
In this section you should present the results you obtained on Days 2 and 3 in a proper scientific manner. Your tables should have proper titles, your figures should have proper legends and be numbered in an ascending order as presented in your text. You should only present and describe the results in this section, do not interpret the data here. No references should be needed in the results section.
The results section should be structured as follows:
Pipetting, dilution and protein assay results
• A table containing YOUR descriptive statistics for all weights measured AND the respective results of the class database
• A standard curve graph with error bars for the dilutions in tubes and in plate of YOUR results AND a separate of your class database
• A standard curve graph with error bats for YOUR protein assay, including the equation and the result concentration of your unknown sample A based on this equation AND the respective class database results
p53 cancer gene RFLP
A family tree showing the genotypes of the individuals
A figure with your fully annotated agarose gel to contain the DNA marker sizes, the sample name on each lane and the size of each DNA band
Blood type
A table with the blood types of the individuals
A figure with the blood typing strip fully annotated
Alkaline phosphatase activity
A graph with the alkaline phosphatase activity of the individuals
Urine sample results
A figure with two panels, one with the photograph of the antibiotic resistance test and one with the dip-stick labelled A and B respectively
HIV test
A figure with two panels, one with the immunoblot strip and one with the Western blot labelled A and B. Both need to be fully annotated
Discussion
This section should have two parts. The first part will discuss the Practical A results and the second will discuss the Practical B results. The use of subheadings will help the reader follow your thought easier.
The following elements should be addressed in your discussion:
• What do your results mean? How do they compare to the class database? What is the reason behind any discrepancies?
• With reference to your data from Practical B you should discuss which sample corresponds to which patient and why as well as evaluate whether the techniques used were appropriate and why/why not.
• Discuss the importance of quality control in laboratory testing and how this parameter may have affected your results
• You should also include a concise conclusion which brings the report together
