Classroom Management Plan
I. Classroom Culture and Relationships
My desired classroom culture is one where students feel safe, respected, and valued. I want to create a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and asking questions. I believe that building strong relationships with my students and their families is crucial for creating this culture.
For communication with the families regarding their student’s classroom behavior and ability to meet set expectations, I will focus on a variety of methods as follows. I will send weekly updates via email or a classroom management platform such as Class Dojo. This will include information on what we covered in class that week, as well as any concerns or successes the student had. Also, I will hold a parent-teacher conferences twice a year, where families can discuss their student’s progress and any concerns they may have.
My principles in this will be to support and engage families and the community through respectful, reciprocal relationships. This means actively seeking out their input and feedback, and involving them in the classroom as much as possible. Notably, is to make an effort of understanding and respecting each family’s cultural background and incorporate this into the classroom.
II. Classroom Rules/Expectations and Procedures
My class will consist of around 25 students, a relatively high number of participants in my classroom. As such, to introduce and implement my classroom rules and procedures, I will start by clearly communicating them to the students by considering age-appropriate language and visual aids to explain the rules and procedures. I will also make sure to discuss the reasons behind each rule and procedure, so that students understand the importance of following them.
In a bid to create a healthy, respectful, supportive, and inclusive classroom, I will discuss shared values and expectations with my students. This includes things like treating each other with kindness and respect, being responsible and respectful with classroom materials, and following rules and procedures. I will also make sure to model these values and expectations myself, as students learn best through example.
Regarding safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, I will ensure that students are aware of the importance of online safety and digital citizenship by focusing on issues such as cyberbullying, plagiarism, and online privacy. More so, the understanding of the privileges of using technology in the classroom and that they must follow specific rules and procedures to ensure its safe and appropriate use.
III. Student Behavior
To encourage and praise good behavior, I will use positive reinforcement strategies such as verbal praise, stickers, and rewards. I will also make sure to acknowledge and celebrate when students meet or exceed expectations.
On the other hand, for preventing and managing misbehavior, I will set clear rules and consequences for breaking them, and consistently enforce these rules. Also, by making sure to address misbehavior as soon as it occurs, and redirect students back to the task at hand. All through, I will engage the students to identify and address underlying causes of misbehavior, such as lack of understanding or difficulty with a specific skill.
For cognitive, social, and emotional development, I have strategized on providing opportunities for hands-on learning and problem-solving, encouraging social interactions, and using mindfulness techniques. With that, providing a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable expressing their emotions and seeking help when needed will enable me get the right feedback on progress.
