Nationalism also promotes self-determination, as it allows a group of people to govern themselves and make decisions that affect their lives. However, there are also downsides to nationalism. One of the most significant concerns is that nationalism can lead to increased conflict and violence. Additionally, nationalism can lead to the suppression of individual rights and freedoms, as it often emphasizes group rights and interests over those of individuals (Giddens, Pg. 2).
