Student Instructions for NURS1006 Supplementary Assessment 2022
What does the supplementary assessment involve?
The topic coordinator will randomly allocate you a case study from the NURS1006 weekly content. You will need to prepare an audio or video recording (10-12 mins) of yourself discussing the legal and ethical implications of the allocated case study using Steps 1-3 of the decision-making framework (McDonald & Then 2019) from the perspective of yourself as a first-year nursing student.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed on two components:
1. The content of the recording you upload to FLO (80%);
2. The language, presentation and timing of your recording (20%).
Please refer to the marking rubric (Attachment 1) at the end of this document for details.
What does the recording involve?
The recording (10-12 mins) will require you to discuss the legal and ethical considerations in your allocated case study using Steps 1-3 of the decision-making framework (McDonald & Then 2019). At minimum, you need to record audio of you speaking. A video recording with audio is desirable, but will NOT impact your grade. You are encouraged to use notes (e.g. dot points) but reading directly from a script is not recommended. PowerPoint slides are not recommended because they do not add to your grade (refer to rubric).
A suggested plan for the timing of your presentation is as follows. There are no penalties for specific sections being over/under these recommended times, provided the whole video is within 10-12 minutes. If your video is longer than 12 minutes, the tutor will stop marking at the 12 minute point.
Suggested plan for the timing of your presentation (10-12 mins)
Suggested time Item and description (based on McDonald & Then 2019)

– Type of ethical issue (violation, dilemma, distress)
– Outline who is involved (or should be involved) & their interests
– Gather information
3-4 minutes Step 2: Evaluate the issues
– Relevant ethical principles
– Relevant legal principles
3-4 minutes Step 3: What to do in practice
– Identify options
– Make a decision and take responsibility
– Justify decision
<30 seconds Conclusion/summary
Do I need to use referencing or provide a reference list?
You do not need to provide a reference list because this is not a written assignment. However, when you verbally mention specific laws or professional guidelines, you should mention their name so the marker knows that you can ‘identify and apply’ relevant professional guidelines and/or legislation (refer rubric – Attachment 1). You should use authoritative sources, which include readings and resources from the NURS1006 topic content.
How can I prepare for the supplementary assessment?
Content preparation
The supplementary assessment will draw upon legal and ethical concepts covered across the eight-weeks of NURS1006. As such, you should revise all topic content, with a particular focus on revising Steps 1-3 of the decision-making framework (McDonald & Then 2019).
Technical preparation
You need to consider several things from a technical perspective. Firstly, you will be uploading a very large audio or video file which could take a long time with slow or unreliable internet. If you have slow or unreliable internet, it is strongly advised that you complete and upload the supplementary assessment on campus to ensure high-quality, uninterrupted internet access.
Secondly, you need to consider how you will make the recording. You are able to use whichever recording method you feel most comfortable with, and options include using your phone/tablet/laptop or the Desktop Recorder. More information about recording video assignments can be found here. It is advisable to practice recording with your chosen method in advance.
What do I need to submit, and how do I submit it?
All you need to submit on FLO is your audio or video recording. It must be submitted via the ‘Supplementary Assessment’ portal using ‘My Media’. More information can be found on the FLO Student Support page about video assignments, and by scrolling down to the section titled ‘My Media & embed method’ (pictured below).
What if I have difficulty submitting my assignment?
If you have difficulty submitting your audio/video file, you must contact FLO Student Support immediately. You should also notify the topic coordinator by email within 24 hours of your due date/time so that they are aware of your situation. If your assignment is late due to technical difficulties, you will need to provide evidence (i.e. screenshots, correspondence with FLO support) to demonstrate that technical difficulties were the reason for your late submission. Otherwise, late submission penalties will apply.
