Case Study Abortion
FIRST, Consider the case below.
Jane, a mother of three children, aged 17 months, two and a half years, and five years, discovered she was pregnant again when she was six weeks along. In the past, she would have been happy about this news, but at the end of her last pregnancy she had acquired a condition known as peripartum cardiomyopathy and had been instructed not to become pregnant again. Cardiomyopathy is a form of heart disease in which the muscle of the heart is weakened and has difficulty pumping adequate levels of blood throughout the body. Pregnancy is contraindicated for patients with cardiomyopathy because the increase in blood volume that occurs naturally in pregnancy can result in cardiac failure and death. At eight weeks of pregnancy, Jane underwent a chemical stress test of her heart to determine whether she could carry the pregnancy to term. The test had to be stopped when only half complete because Jane began experiencing ventricular tachycardia, a potentially lethal abnormal rhythm of the heart. Jane’s physician strongly recommended that she terminate the pregnancy because the test showed conclusively that her heart was not strong enough to carry the pregnancy to viability. Jane, a faithful Catholic, resisted, saying she would rather try to carry the pregnancy as close as possible to viability. At 10 weeks, Jane went to the emergency department of the Catholic hospital in town with chest pain and difficulty breathing. She was admitted, and they attempted to manage her arrhythmia medically, but they could not stabilize her. The physicians called for an ethics consult because they saw no other option but to terminate the pregnancy using surgical means, thereby, relieving the stress on Jane’s heart.
Imagine you are on this ethics team at the Catholic hospital. You know that the Church’s teaching means protecting both the life of the mother and of the child. But this does not mean that the mother’s life must be sacrificed for the life of a child. What do you recommend to Jane and her physicians?
SECOND, imagine you are on this ethics team at the Catholic hospital and assume you are a citizen of state that allows for abortions. You know that the Church’s teaching means protecting both the life of the mother and of the child. But this does not mean that the mother’s life must be sacrificed for the life of a child. In a post of 250 sentences, what do you recommend to Jane and her physicians? In your post, draw on the presentation and readings for this module.
