Funding for treatment

There are a number of social justice issues related to mental health. This semester, I want you to organize and carry out an activism project that relates to one of these themes. Remember that activism can take on many forms – from writing a letter to a politician to participating in a march or protest. You can find a few examples on NAMI’s website

To get you to start thinking about this project, here are some topics to consider:

Funding for treatment
Equity in access to treatment
Affordability of treatment
The role of racism, sexism, or other means of bias in diagnosis and treatment
The opioid crisis
Prevention measures/funding
You will create a PowerPoint that details your activism project. Your PowerPoint should include the following information:

Identified problem or issue
Research on/history of the problem
The activist activity you did
Assessment of how effective the activism was
Discussion of further work that needs to be done on this issue
How you see activism in this area benefiting your current or future clients and/or work
Personal reflection on this project
How did you feel about activism before this project? While engaging in activism? Afterwards?
What did you learn about the issue/problem? Activism? Yourself?
