Nursing and Counseling Theories
Introduction
Nursing and counseling theories are effective in dealing with clients with various problems. The theories also help in addressing clients from different backgrounds. During the practicum, students select theories that will guide their practicum. My two theories are interpersonal theory and cognitive behavior therapy. The two effectively address multiple problems and achieve different objectives (Manchaiah et al., 2020). The practicum goal is to provide an opportunity to synthesize, integrate, and apply practical skills. The objectives of the practicum include combining personality with counseling skills to develop professionalism. The practicum practice also requires a list of activities and their timeline. The essay aims at examining the interpersonal and cognitive behavior therapy, goals and objectives of practicum, and the timeline of activities.
Interpersonal Theory and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
The interpersonal theory states that relationships with significant others determine a sense of security, a sense of self, and motivating positive behavior. I selected the theory since it helps reduce distress and improving the quality of interpersonal relationships and social functioning (Hetric et al., 2016). The theory is also effective in addressing four major areas, including dealing with unresolved grief, unfulfilling relationships, difficult life transitions, and resolving personal disputes. The interpersonal theory effectively resolves major depressive disorders and disorders such as drug and alcohol addiction (Larsen et al., 2020). I selected the theory since I believe I will encounter many people with such problems.
Cognitive behavior therapy focuses on changing the patterns of thinking to change the way people feel or behave. I selected the theory since it helps reduce stress and cope with difficult relationships (Dolan & Willson, 2019). I selected the theory since it improves self-esteem, creates positive thoughts, boosts coping skills, and prevents relapse to negative behavior.
Goals and Objectives
The practicum goal is to provide an opportunity to synthesize, integrate, and apply practical skills and knowledge to gain professional knowledge. Another goal is to become part of the community by working closely with the mentor or supervisor and the clients (Dolan & Willson, 2019). Another goal is to enhance my cultural competence. The objectives of the practicum include combining personality with counseling skills to develop professionalism. I also aspire to gain a deeper insight into the counseling field and deal with various clients. Another objective is to identify the weaknesses and improve my skills (Dolan & Willson, 2019). The goals and objectives will provide an opportunity for growth and practical perspective of counseling.
Timeline of Practicum
September – October – search for an appropriate opportunity in a local organization
October – November – discuss with the organization on the learning and practice opportunities.
November – complete practicum learning plan including the theories, goals and objectives.
End of November – receive approval.
December to April – complete the project and submit progress.
End of April – submit the preceptor and student report and practicum final report.
Total practicum hours = 100.
Conclusion
Nursing and counseling theories are effective in guiding students during their practicum. The selected theories include interpersonal theory and cognitive behavior therapy. Interpersonal theory helps reduce distress and improving the quality of interpersonal relationships and social functioning. Cognitive behavior therapy helps reduce stress and cope with difficult relationships. The essay also examines the goals and objectives of practicum. The goals and objectives will provide an opportunity for growth and practical perspective of counseling. It also provides the timeline of activities for the practicum.
