Week 3: Practicum: Population Cultural Considerations and Genetic Predispositions
DUE DATE: OCT. 28
This week, you will identify any genetic predisposition your chosen population has to a particular disease and develop primary practice interventions that reflect the cultural considerations of the population. Then, you will develop culturally appropriate, measureable interventions to help your population members maintain an optimal state of health, avoiding the problem that you identified them being at risk for developing.
In 1 full page, please discuss the following questions in your Practicum Discussion:
Provide a few examples of community resources that should be put in place to Help your population in resolving their health care needs. What gaps in service do you see that affect your population?
Are there any cultural considerations that might inform your approach to caring for this population?
Does your population have a genetic predisposition to the health care problem you have identified?
Identify at least one evidence-based, culturally competent behavior change that would promote health for your selected population and for the specific health care problem you are addressing?
Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.
For all posts, be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old).

Population Cultural Considerations and Genetic Predispositions
The community resources that Help the population in resolving healthcare needs include house-to-house campaigns and preparedness implementation kits. Other resources include communication channels that emphasize behavior change (Sastry & Dutta, 2017). For instance, cleaning hands is an important community approach that limits the spread of the virus. Embracing healthy cultural traditions is an effective approach to eliminating the risk of infection.
Caring for the population requires adequate consideration of the cultural values of the community. The communities affected by Ebola Virus in West African countries have various cultural values that affect treatment provision (Sastry & Dutta, 2017). Communities have compassionate care for the patients and ceremonial washing of the dead. The consideration is to educate the communities of the practices that expose them to the virus (Carter et al., 2017). Nurses should demonstrate that communities can play a significant role in reducing the spread and eliminating the virus.
The population in West Africa does not have a genetic predisposition to the virus. The virus spreads among healthcare workers, laboratory workers, and family members of the sick. The population is exposed to the virus due to the poor handling of the blood samples, dead bodies, or the infected people (Carter et al., 2017). The factors contribute to the further spread of the disease.
The populations in West Africa can increase their ability to counter the disease by avoiding contact with infected people or dead bodies. The communities can change cultural practices such as cleansing the dead bodies or caring for the sick (Sastry & Dutta, 2017). It is important to allow professional healthcare workers with personal protective equipment to care for the sick (Sastry & Dutta, 2017). The approaches are the contributing factors that undermine the ability to suppress the spread of the virus.
