We begin our journey into discovering the new world of research and evidence-based practice (EBP) by exploring our past. After completing the required readings and lesson, answer the following:
· Explain how research has evolved since the Florence Nightingale era.
· Discuss how research and EBP are different; include how you believe research supports EBP for nursing.
· Describe one past/historical unethical breach of research conduct; then, share how you would ensure care of a study participant using one ethical or legal research consideration (guideline/principle).

Research and Evidence-Based Practice
Research has evolved since the era of Florence Nightingale. She was one of the first nurses to apply scientific methods. Florence Nightingale collected statistical data to understand the cause of death among soldiers during the Crimean war (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2017). Some of the factors included sanitation, hygiene, food, and water. The same practice is applied today in health care facilities to reduce hospital-acquired infections. It is used to improve patient outcomes among diverse populations (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2017). Hospitals research the factors that could undermine the delivery of care. Unlike the popular nurse Florence Nightingale, various organizations are collecting statistical data (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2017). Healthcare facilities are using evidence-based practices to promote patient outcomes.
Evidence-based practices focus on identifying the best and most current available evidence that healthcare workers can embrace to boost care. Research involves collecting information and developing new ideas (Kozleski, 2017). Healthcare workers rely on EBP to provide quality and reliable care. It helps them to minimize medical errors that undermine patient recovery. Research supports EBP since healthcare workers gather knowledge from research studies to generate clinical expertise (Kozleski, 2017). EBP cannot exist without research since it generates information and knowledge about healthcare practices.
One of the historical ethical issues in research occurred in 1947 during the Nuremberg trials. The researchers were accused of failure to acquire informed consent from the participants (Merz, 2019). They were blamed for holding people in concentration camps. After the incidence, the guidelines show that researchers should acquire informed consent and allow participants to leave if they wish. (Merz, 2019) One way of ensuring care for the research participants is to inform them about the dynamics of a study. The participants should sign a consent form after they receive comprehensive information about the study. The consent form should allow the participants to quit the study at any time.
