Human Pathophysiology
The selected health condition is influenza. The disease is caused by the influenza virus that affects the nose, lung, and throat. Influenza can lead to mild or severe health complications that can lead to death. Individuals can safeguard themselves from the disease by taking a flu vaccine annually (Vanderbeke et al., 2018). A 2019-2020 Center for Disease Control health report estimates that 38 million people contracted the disease, 18 million people were treated in various hospitals, while 22,000 patients succumbed to the influenza virus (Vanderbeke et al., 2018).
Influenza affects people of all ages and gender. Individuals with influenza experience symptoms such as fever, chills, fatigue, runny nose, congestion, chills, and muscle aches (Vanderbeke et al., 2018). Individuals experiencing the symptoms of influenza should get treatment and rest. The purpose is to allow the immune system to fight off the disease.
The disease occurs due to infection by the influenza virus, which belongs to the Orthomyxoviridae family. The risk factors include age, poor working conditions, chronic illness, pregnancy, and obesity (El Ramahi & Freifeld, 2019). An annual flu vaccine significantly reduces the infection and death rate (Vanderbeke et al., 2018). Other prevention mechanisms include covering the mouth and nose while sneezing, maintaining hand hygiene, and maintaining quality ventilation.
Patients with the virus require medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment. Antiviral drugs are necessary for the successful treatment of the virus. Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) 75mg is one of the drugs vital in the treatment of influenza (El Ramahi & Freifeld, 2019). The drugs relieve the symptoms’ severity and shorten the recovery period to a maximum of two days. Tamiflu prevents the virus’s multiplication and reduces its effect on the body (El Ramahi & Freifeld, 2019). Immediate treatment is necessary to alleviate the risk of severity and death. Prevention and treatment measures are necessary to reduce the rate of infection and saves lives.
