PEER 1-KH
My name is Keely, and I am from Washington state. I am majoring in psychology; I hope to be able to make a difference in peoples lives by helping them navigate their lives through different systems.
According to the CDC the social ecosystems are individual, relationship, community, and societal. My social ecosystems consist of all four levels, and they are constantly changing. I am the child of alcoholic parents, and my sister is a recovered addict. I used drugs and drank alcohol when I was 12 or 13. As an individual I was at risk of becoming a young parent, living a life of addiction, and without much hope for an education. My relationships and community is what set me up for a different life. I watched my friends and their family model supportive, sober lives and those same friends took me in and refused to let me become a statistic. My high school teachers and counselors kept the school open on nights and weekends to give the at-risk youth a safe place to go and for others to get educational help therefore I spent less time and home and more time watching adults make a difference in our life’s. When I did become a young mother, society told me that I need to make my relationship work because a broken home was no way to raise a child. And so, I stayed in a controlling, abusive relationship until a stable family member asked me why I was staying in that kind of a relationship and what kind of example I was setting for my daughter. Despite what society told me, I ended my relationship and focused on my daughter, work, and a college degree. Recently I have been struggling with my societal ecosystems. I have been going through treatment from breast cancer. I have lost my hair, most of my eyebrows and eyelashes as well as my breast. Society tells me that these characteristics are my identity and I need them to be beautiful. My identity has is not my appearance but when I look in the mirror I feel like I can’t make my appearance match my identity or what I feel on the inside. My social ecosystems changed me, and the changes were intentional. I saw all the challenges with how I was brought up and I did everything in my power to avoid those things in my life and my children’s lives. I try to be the mother that I wanted growing up and I try to create a safe environment for children.
I think that people act more based on their group’s behaviors. All of my friends were from “normal” families, and even though I was from a poor family with addiction issues, so I tried to mirror the image that I saw in my friends and their families. This is still true today, how I act is dependent on what group I am with. I can be professional at work, a more country with my mom, more liberal with my dad, and more free with my friends.
The concept of identity and the group apply to the programmatic course theme of emotional intelligence. Understanding where your identity came from and how different groups affected your identity allows you to except different parts of your life. It also allows you to make changes as you need to without feeling like you are losing parts of your identity.

PEER2-BB
Hi everyone,
My name is Bridget. I am from Massachusetts; I am majoring in Forensic Psychology. I hope to bring my education all the way to my doctorate degree. I work full time as a correctional officer, with the jail I work at they have different professions I can work in while still working as an officer, I hope in a year to apply to their tactical response team then three later I hope to apply for canine officer position. I look forward to the following weeks in this class and getting to know everyone.
I was having issues with downloading the book for this course, I re-bought it and just waiting on the code to get re-sent to me, so I did my best with defining the social ecosystem which I had googled. But I noticed the first question was various levels of my social ecosystem, so I am going to reflect on that question regarding law enforcement.
• What are the various levels of your social ecosystem? In what ways have they changed in the past 5 or 10 years?
Social ecosystem is known as the study of how people interact with one another and their response to the environment around them, in addition to how those interactions affect society and the environment as a whole.
Over the past decade prisons have changed most states within the US have some form sanction programs that are alternatives for being incarcerated. Often, depending on the charges a judge may offer boot camp to an eight-teen year old verues sending that person to jail for two years. They even send teenagers to a boot camp to teach them discipline and respect for others, but what has become more common now a days is supervised probation or parole, and house arrest. Those three types allow those who have been arrested one last chance to get a hold of their life’s and give them a chance to show the courts that they can become a productive member of society. (Layton Mackenzie)
• If something has changed within your social ecosystem, was it intentional? Or did your social ecosystem change you?
The change within the social ecosystem in corrections was an intentional change especially during the Covid-19 pandemic jails and prisons were faced with uptick of positive cases and something had to be done to help prevent, in many metro areas there was high incarceration which led to higher outbreak that led policy makers needing to make a change. With that change came the release of some inmates in “between March and June, more than 100,000 people were released from state and federal pris-ons” (BC) In addition to jails and prison suspending in-person visit, there was still outcry from the public for more to be down. In Massachusetts the department of corrections started to take steps to implement home confinement programs that started early 2021 that would release 20-25 incarcerated people at a time. Now at the jail I am in at, in order to be there you have to have committed a felony crime, or be on your third OUI, or awaiting to be sent to federal/state prison, Covid-19 has changed the amount of people being sent to jail/prisons in order to keep the numbers down as most people do not stay in jails often.
• How have your relationships with specific aspects of your social ecosystem helped to shape your identity?
My relationships with my social environment have helped shape my identity by growing up people in my family where in the military, law enforcement, school, nursing field. Each field has a caring aspect it to when it comes to others, and to show levels of restraint. Growing up I was shown how helping others was important, since I was young I always wanted to help others but fell in love with law.
• Do you think people act more based on who they are or based on their group’s behavior? Please provide a specific example to support your position.
This question I believe depends on the environment a person is, for example while I am at work, I cannot joke around with inmates like I do with my friends.
• How does the concept of identity and the group apply to any of the following programmatic course themes:
I believe social ecosystem relates to emotional intelligence because, a person regardless of their environment needs to be aware of their emotions and have the ability to self-control their emotions. A person needs to how to respond to not only their emotions but to the emotions of people around them.
