Distinction of Sociology Terms
The term sex refers to a biological idea, whereas gender is a social hypothesis. Sex is based on anatomy, physical features, and genetic elements that differentiate women, intersex, and men. On the other hand, gender is based on cultural and social differences assigned by society to both biological sexes. Besides, people’s behaviour is correlated to the gender roles imposed on them by society. Hence, based on an individual’s biological sex and gender roles, he or she will depict socially-expected personalities and conduct.
Additionally, the distinction of sociological terms in contemporary society has promoted rising cases of various identities. Many people have readily accepted to freely express how they feel instead of reluctantly adapting to the sex identity assigned at birth. Thus, it is why some individuals with female genitalia identify as male. Others choose to be agender by not aligning themselves to any gender.
Moreover, gender stratification refers to a situation where there are competing genders. One gender seeks to dominate over the other for various reasons. For instance, men are mostly viewed as superior to women; hence, most employers hire men more than women in most cases (Reuben, 2014). In some regions, men get more paid than women even though they hold the same qualifications and positions. Also, some communities value educating male kids other than their female children. Similarly, religious views on marriage can create gender stratification, such as Islam only allows men to marry multiple wives.
Gender plays a significant role in news coverage. Most media outlets prefer to report on male sports than female sports (Friedman, 2021). There is evidence that suggests that sometimes the media newsrooms mostly prefer to report on gender-related controversies. For instance, recently, The Guardian reported on Caster Semenya’s ban by the World Athletics, which stops her from defending her title in Tokyo. The article plays a crucial part in proving that gender discrimination exists in modern sports (Brenner, 2021). However, from the article, Caster Semenya vows to fight for her right to compete. However, World Athletics have remained firm on their ban.
