Biological factors In Joe’s Family
Joe’s Family from the movie “Joe the King” is affected by various biological factors which come into play in this household. Bob and Theresa Henry have been married for at least 15 years with two children, Mike and Joe. Their sons’ age stands out as the first biological factor. Their sons being adolescents, are going through puberty that encompasses hormones and psychological changes, which subsequently affected their social life due to insecurities and desire to be more social. For instance, in Joe’s case, he was not the average 14 years old as he has a more petite, less developed body. This came from a lack of proper nutrition for the adolescent due to the Family’s financial instability. Joe also fails to get proper enough sleep due to his work schedule. Joe and his brother were forced to morph and harden as time passed by. Bob’s addiction to alcohol does affect him biologically. Whenever Bob had not drunk alcohol, his body would act like withdrawing, causing him to be more aggressive and violent. Subsequently, Theresa undergoes extensive stress and anxiety brought on by her husband’s temper and alcoholism. Theresa could have extensive cortisol levels, which is the body’s primary stress level, and failing to control it leads to anxiety and high blood pressure.
The different biological factors do affect these individuals’ family lives. It becomes evident that the two boys are growing up in non-affectionate family life, with everyone being forced to do what they can to get basic needs such as food at least. The dysfunctionality in the Family led to Jow engaging in criminal activities. Mike, the eldest brother, became ashamed of Joe, hence ignoring him due to the unethical and rebellious behaviors he was engaging in. notably, these ba=ehaviors arose from the toxic relationship he had with his abusive father and alcohol addict. It becomes evident how genetics and one’s environment determine human patterns. Joe was an adolescent who needed love and direction. Still, he could not get it from his family environment hence his engagement in crime leading to being locked in a juvenile detention center.
Adolescents still need love, guidance, and protection from their parents, especially during puberty and hormones coming into play extensively. However, if they lack this and have mental challenges, especially from their societal environment, they are more likely to engage in any behaviors.
