The United States of America is a multicultural nation. This phenomenon is particularly crucial in nursing at all levels of practice. Nurses interact with hundreds of people from different walks of life on a daily basis. Every patient that a nurse encounters is different from the next regarding how they think and perceive healthcare. All nurses are responsible for providing care in the best interest of the patients and the community they serve. The patients are also entitled to receive quality and unbiased care regardless of their gender, race, age, disability, or social-economic status.
The growing cultural diversity in society demands that nurses understand cultural diversity and how it can impact them during practice. Cultural competence has become an essential requirement for nurses before they begin practicing. A culturally competent nurse can identify and deal with each patient by acknowledging and respecting their beliefs, attitudes, thoughts, and priorities.
Some cultural aspects that may directly impact nursing include language. Sometimes, the nurse and the patient do not share a language. The nurse, in this case, will have to get an interpreter who will help break the communication barrier. Lack of a mediator can slow or prevent the nurse from providing optimum care for the patient. Some cultures, like with most Hispanic subgroups, the entire family is involved in making major health decisions and must, therefore, be consulted before any treatment is selected.
Religious beliefs and practices also influence nursing significantly. Some beliefs and practices affect how a person perceives certain health care practices. For instance, some religious beliefs may affect the willingness of a person to take certain treatments. When faced with such a dilemma, the nurse must understand and seek help from other health care professions and probably pursue other treatment methods.
Also, some typical actions and behaviors may be considered intolerable in some societies. For instance, in some cultures, eye contact or physical touch is considered inappropriate and offensive. Being aware of such customs allows the nurse to take the necessary measures when dealing with the patients. When it comes to dietary concerns, the nurse should give dietary advice within the range of foods the patients can take.
It may not be easy to learn about the culture and ways of a patient. Therefore, the nurse should always respectfully engage and ask the patients regarding their health beliefs and customs or anything else that can impact their health care. This allows the nurse to deal with each patient uniquely based on their cultural values, specifically in the context of their health care.
