Journal Club for Qualitative Research Article
The purpose of this assignment is to describe the research design and methodology.
Research Design

The research design is a descriptive qualitative study design. The design is a flexible exploratory approach to research. The design is used to address the specific aims of the research. The research aims to analyze intra-hospital handover.
Sample Selection

The sample was 49 nurses who participated in the group interviews. The focus of the interviews is to analyze the intra-hospital handover, including the challenges and dynamics of handover.
Data Collection Methods

Group interview was used to collect data from the participants. The method of data collection is effective in clarifying pre-conceived ideas. Group interviews provide opportunities to identify the unmet needs in a workplace. Group interviews involves learning about ideas the researcher did not consider in the initial stage. Group interviews allow the researcher to confirm the meaning behind the facts.

Plans for Data Analysis

The data was analyzed using inductive content analysis. The qualitative method effectively identifies themes by studying documents or analyzing interviews. The method is effective if a similar content analysis has not been done in the past. The objective is to condense elaborate interviews into a brief summary. Researchers have to be careful since the results will be flawed if the coding is inaccurate.

Strengths (include two strengths)

Group interviews are essential methods of data collection. One of the strengths is collecting in-depth information about a subject. Holding a conversation with nurses provides information that the researcher did not consider important (Adler et al., 2019). The second strength is the ability to study the non-verbal communication of the interviewees. Unlike questionnaires, personal interaction with the participants allows researchers to ask follow-up questions. Group interviews allow the researcher to ask sensitive questions that would be difficult to ask individual nurses (Adler et al., 2019). Group interviews will allow researchers to analyze sensitive topics due to the confidence of the participants to share information. Collecting elaborate information improves the quality of outcomes.
Weaknesses (include two weaknesses)

Group interviews are not the best data collection method due to the risk of sharing sensitive information. Some participants would like privacy to communicate some issues affecting a company. For instance, nurses in the study cannot speak against their bosses or the company (Adler et al., 2019). The fear of retribution will make the participants focus on a company’s strengths compared to the weaknesses. Interviewers will need specialized skills to moderate the interview and provide every participant with adequate information to share their views. Researchers have to think about the weaknesses before starting the research (Adler et al., 2019). Addressing the weaknesses will improve the quality of results.
