The study aimed to investigate the relationship between activity, mobility, and pressure ulcer (PU) development among older adult residents in long-term care. It also aimed to develop an algorithm for detecting PU risk based on activity and mobility levels.
A total of 53 older adult residents were followed prospectively for 4 days. Their Braden scores, Elderly Mobility Scale scores, and movement levels were assessed. Movement was measured objectively using a sensor that counted movements.
Key findings included a 15.1% incidence of visual skin assessment-detected PUs. Movement levels were not significantly correlated with Braden or Elderly Mobility Scale scores. Both low and high movers developed PUs.
The researchers concluded that current PU risk assessment tools may not accurately capture movement-based risk. An algorithm incorporating objective movement data could help identify at-risk individuals among both low and high movers.
Implications for practice include considering movement-based assessments to supplement existing tools. Real-time movement monitoring may enable early detection and targeted prevention strategies.
Further research is still needed to establish standardized movement-based algorithms and classifications for PU risk stratification. Prospective studies incorporating movement data could help validate algorithm-based approaches.
