Scenario
A first step in developing Information systems is to conduct a preliminary study, this could also be termed a scoping
study. The objective of this is to conduct a preliminary analysis, propose alternative solutions, describe costs and
benefits and submit a preliminary plan with recommendations to a client.
When conducting the preliminary analysis you need to find out the organization’s objectives and the nature and scope of
the problem under study. Even if a problem refers only to a small segment of the organization itself, you need to find out
what the objectives of the organization itself are. Then you need to see how the problem being studied fits in with them.
You may also need to propose a range of solutions. In digging into the organization’s objectives and specific problems,
you may have already covered some solutions. Alternate proposals may come from interviewing employees, clients,
suppliers, and/or consultants. You can also study what competitors are doing. With this data, you will have three
choices: leave the system as is, improve it, or develop a new system.

Case
You work as a graduate consultant for a consulting firm in one of the branches (Australia and Malaysia) of Victoria
University Information Systems Consulting (VUIS). You have worked there for six months. The company has been
in operation for five years and has 70 employees including the general manager, consultants, administrative staff,
project managers, programmers, business analysts, a technical writer and a trainer.
The company provides General Business plus Information Systems consulting services and also develops
eCommerce and CRM solutions for a range of small to medium sized organisations. The solutions are often hosted in
the cloud.
VUIS always develop a scoping report for their clients as a first step to a fully detailed requirements report.

All information systems require discussion of how the information system will be rolled out or implemented. For the
scoping report we expect you to consider and discuss the following issues:

Identify 5 different risk and suggest risk mitigation strategies
What sorts of risks are likely in rolling out the new system?

You and your group will provide consulting services to one of the clients mentioned above as part of a consulting group.
You will choose the members of your team in Week 6 and work with them in class and outside of class to complete the
Case Study Scoping Report. The scoping report and specifications will provide your chosen VUIS Consulting client
with an overview of the selected system so they can determine if they want to proceed with implementing such a
system in their own business. It will also guide them on the requirements for the new system. The report will also
highlight the benefits and issues associated with adopting such a system.

Preamble
To be able to successfully complete this assessment task you need to be familiar with the content in lectures and
tutorials. Throughout the semester we have emphasised that Information Systems is significantly different from just
computing or computer science. Information systems comprise five components; computer components and software
but most importantly people, procedures, data, development and security. An information systemproduces information that
helps with decisionmaking.
We have a range of activities to do in class but you should treat class as a formal meeting time for your project
wherever possible. It will be a time when you can discuss issues, present back to the class, identify problems, learn
from other groups and consult your tutor who is deemed to be your VUIS supervisor. You will also need to work and
meet outside of class time to complete these assessment tasks.
Scoping Report Format
You need to download the report template file available from VUColl and use it to prepare your report. Your report
should show your tutor that you have researched the topic, applied it to the case study and have argued a direction the
business should take. We are not expecting detailed computer specifications in the report. But you should be able to
relate the things you have found about these systems to the various components of information systems.
Presentation
On week 12 you will need to present your findings. The aim of the presentation is twofold: to show that you understand
what you have written in the report, and that you can convince a panel that your recommendations are appropriate.
Submission
The report component of this assignment is due for submission on week 12. Prior to submitting your assignment
you need to be submit it through Turnitin via the BCO1102 VU Collaborate site.
Peer review:
This is a team assessment but there will be a peer review to be conducted by the team and this will guide the lecturer in
the allocation of final grades for this assessment. Marks will be awarded according to the topics you have covered in the
report and your presentation. See the Rubrics for allocation of grades.

You are required to develop a project evaluation report based on a case study provided on Canvas. Your project
evaluation report will answer four specific questions which are provided with the case study. The project
evaluation report is an opportunity for you to demonstrate what you have learned during the semester about
project management. You have to write an evaluation report for a project based on a case study on Canvas. In your report evaluating the project, you will answer four questions that come with the case study. The project evaluation report is your chance to show what you’ve learned about the project over the course of the semester.

You should present your answer to each question logically and use references from academic journals and books
to substantiate key points. You should cite at least 3 different references in each answer using the RMIT
Harvard/Business format. We would like you to demonstrate independent research into project management
concepts. Thus, the references provided in the summary case study and the course text are not included in the
minimum 3 references required for each answer. You may cite them, but your answers should focus on project
management concepts, practice and evidence-based solutions that respond to the question rather than a detailed
description of issues evident in the case. The requirement to use three project management references beyond
those provided with the case and the course text is noted as 3 new references in the assessment rubric.
The assessment criteria noted in the rubric specifies originality. This means you must avoid over reliance on
quotations in your answer. You are encouraged to paraphrase sources wherever possible and to compare and
contrast sources to demonstrate critical analysis of the issues.
Some of the answers are matters of opinion and you will need to study the literature for ways to approach them.
To support your answer, you can refer to project management books, PMBOK, peer reviewed journal articles and
authenticated sources.
This assignment must be presented in a word document containing 4 numbered sections. The section number
should correspond to the question being answered. E.g. 1-4. You must also include a RMIT Harvard/Business
format reference list at the close of your submission. No title sheet, introduction, conclusion or executive summary
is required. You just need to answer the four questions and include a reference list.
Submit your report via the Turnitin submission point on Canvas. It is your responsibility to ensure your report has
a satisfactory Turnitin result when you submit. This means you should submit early to allow time to read, interpret
results, and to fix any issues that are evident. Usually, it should record a matching score of less than 20%. We are
using a common set of questions so in some circumstances a higher score may be acceptable providing only
common elements are highlighted (e.g. Section headings/name of the case).
Where whole sentences or significant portions of sentences are highlighted, try to paraphrase to reduce similarity
when resubmitting your report. Do not copy and paste the case summary, case study report or case references
without citing sources in accordance with the RMIT Harvard/Business format. When you refer to the case, ensure
you cite the relevant source. All text copied from a source must appear in quotation marks with a citation. All
paraphrased text based on a source must include a relevant citation to demonstrate your research.
A whole list of references being highlighted as coming from a single source is also problematic whereas a multi
coloured reference list is usually OK. Familiarise yourself with how to use Turnitin to check the originality of your
submission via the Turnitin submission point on Canvas. Make sure you check your work well in advance of the
submission due date. Always ask your tutor if you are concerned about Turnitin results.
Only upload one word file containing your report. Do not upload or include a cover sheet in your submission. It is
not necessary as uploading to Turnitin indicates your agreement to the terms of assessment submission.
