Legal and Ethical Issues – Please read these directions carefully. I am being very specific. While you do have to share an article, I want this discussion to be relevant to the creation of your courses and that of your peers. Research articles are of no value if they don’t have a practical application.

There are many ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of technology in an educational setting. This week, you will discuss some of these issues and consider how they might impact the development of your online course. Find a recent article in a peer-reviewed nursing or educational journal that discusses potential legal and ethical issues relevant to the use of technology in nursing education (focus on education, not practice).

In one paragraph, describe a few highlights of the article, focusing on the most relevant information for you and your classmates to consider as you create your online courses.
Provide at least two ways that you will incorporate this information into your course design/content in a practical way. Be specific.
Response Posts: Legal and ethical issues are often perceived differently by students and faculty. In your peer responses, consider the implications of the legal and/or issues presented by your classmates from both the instructor and student perspectives. Share a related experience from your nursing education or practice. To meet the rubric requirements, you need a minimum of two peer responses. However, more back and forth interaction is required to achieve the maximum number of points on the rubric under Classroom Engagement.

Ethical concerns arise regarding the protection and appropriate use of this data, ensuring privacy rights are respected, and implementing robust security measures to prevent unauthorized access.

Intellectual Property and Copyright: Technology enables easy distribution and sharing of digital content, which raises issues of intellectual property rights and copyright infringement. It’s important to educate students about the ethical use of digital resources, including proper citation and respect for intellectual property rights.

Accessibility and Inclusion: Technology can create barriers for individuals with disabilities if not designed with accessibility in mind. It’s essential to consider inclusive design principles and ensure that online courses and educational materials are accessible to all learners, complying with accessibility standards and guidelines.

Online Safety and Cyberbullying: With the use of technology, there is an increased risk of cyberbullying, harassment, and inappropriate online behavior. Educational institutions need to establish policies and procedures to address these issues, promote digital citizenship, and ensure a safe and respectful online learning environment.

To incorporate this information into your course design/content, here are two practical suggestions:

Privacy and Data Protection: Include a section in your course that educates students on the importance of privacy and data protection. Provide guidelines on how to handle personal data, emphasize the ethical use of technology, and discuss the institution’s policies and procedures for data protection.

Accessibility Guidelines: Integrate accessibility guidelines into your course design. Provide resources and tools that help students create accessible content, such as captioning videos, creating alt text for images, and designing accessible documents. Encourage students to apply these principles in their own course materials and assignments.
