##Diagnosis and Standard of Care
For any patient noticing new eye symptoms or concerns, our specialists perform a thorough examination including visual acuity tests, slit lamp biomicroscopy, tonometry and dilated funduscopic examination.(1) Additional imaging like ultrasound, MRI, CT or PET scans help determine the extent of disease.(2,3) Biopsies may be needed in some cases to obtain a definitive diagnosis.(4)
For intraocular melanoma, local treatment options include plaque brachytherapy, proton beam radiotherapy, laser therapy, cryotherapy or enucleation depending on tumor size and location.(5,6) Retinoblastoma is typically managed with chemotherapy, focal therapies like thermotherapy or cryotherapy, or enucleation in advanced cases.(7,8) Our goal is early detection and localized treatment whenever possible.
##Research and Clinical Trials
Our practice is actively involved in developing new standards of care. We are currently enrolling patients in trials studying adjuvant therapies after local treatment, novel targeted drugs, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and genetic screening of at-risk family members.(9-11) Results have been promising for select metastatic cases. Ask your care team about eligibility for open studies.
##Lifestyle Guidance
While diet and exercise have uncertain direct impacts, we counsel patients on reducing sun exposure and ultraviolet light through the use of sunglasses and hats.(12) Managing stress is also important for overall health and treatment adherence.
