How has language and/or culture impacted:

Analyze the concept of cultural humility, based on the information that you gathered in the Interview.
Cite any sources in APA format.

To develop interview questions, you could use the Cultural Competence Model proposed by Campinha-Bacote (2002). This model includes five constructs: cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural skill, cultural encounter, and cultural desire. You could use these constructs to guide the development of questions that explore the interviewee’s cultural background, health beliefs, and health practices, as well as their experiences with the healthcare system.

Here are some examples of questions that you could ask, based on each construct of the Cultural Competence Model:

Cultural awareness:

Can you tell me about your cultural background and how it has influenced your health beliefs and practices?
Have you ever felt misunderstood or discriminated against by healthcare professionals because of your culture or ethnicity?
Cultural knowledge:

What are some traditional health practices that are common in your culture?
Are there any cultural beliefs or taboos related to health and illness that you follow?
Cultural skill:

How do you usually communicate with healthcare professionals? Do you prefer to have an interpreter present or do you prefer to speak directly with the provider?
Have you ever had to navigate a complex healthcare system? What strategies have you used to overcome any barriers you encountered?
Cultural encounter:

Have you had any positive or negative experiences with healthcare providers that were related to your culture or ethnicity?
Can you describe a time when your cultural beliefs or practices were not understood by a healthcare professional? How did you handle the situation?
Cultural desire:

What do you think healthcare providers could do to better understand and respect your cultural background?
Are there any resources or support services that you wish were available to you as a member of your cultural community?
After conducting the interview, you can summarize the interviewee’s answers and address the following questions:

With what culture does the person identify?
How does this person define/perceive health and illness, and how is this affected by his or her culture?
Describe the person’s health maintenance, protection, and restoration traditions, and how these have been influenced by culture.
How has language and/or culture impacted access to healthcare and communication with healthcare professionals?
Based on the information gathered in the interview, you can analyze the concept of cultural humility, which involves acknowledging and respecting the inherent differences between cultures, and recognizing that cultural competence is a process of ongoing learning and growth. Some ways that cultural humility might be demonstrated in healthcare settings include actively seeking out cultural knowledge and understanding, engaging in open and respectful communication with patients from diverse backgrounds, and being willing to reflect on and challenge one’s own cultural biases and assumptions.
