My professor’s comment on my old reaserch question: Yes, see if this makes sense. As I understand it, you are wanting to make a head-to-head comparison between the Chinese and US e-commerce systems, concluding which is better; which should be adopted by both countries. My concern is this. It is possible that both systems have been formed by their institutional context, i.e., the culture, laws, and regulation of the country in which it developed. Before concluding that the US should adopt the Chinese system or that China should adopt the US system – of specific features should be adopted – I suggest that you think hard about why the home system, e.g., the U.S. system had not itself evolved to adopt what seems to be an advantage of the Chinese system. Another way of thinking about it is to ask the question, why are they different?

The new research Question after his comment: Why did the U.S e-Commerce system develop differently than the Chinese e-Commerce system? (from cultural, legal, government regulation/policy difference to write this paper)

What i want in this paper is : to write the reasons behind why U.S. ecommerce system develop differently than China’s ecommerce system from different culture, law and regulation/policy these two country have)
Tentative thesis: While China and the U.S have the two largest E-commerce systems in the world, they differ in that Chinese e-commerce focuses on Consumer to Consumer (C2C) transactions rather than Business to Consumer (B2C) transactions, and E-commerce in China is a much more common part of daily life. These separate development paths have been driven by vastly different cultural, legal, and regulatory factors between the two nations.

Brainstorming:

Differences between E-commerce systems

China is C2C while U.S is B2C

China e-commerce is the “main course” while in in the U.S it is “dessert” (Jack Ma)

Differences between cultures, laws, regulations

China has much more prevalent social payment platforms

China regulators cracks down on companies that get very large

Chinese government has deeper surveillance of its citizens: chinese tend to be ok with this, because they feel they cannot rebel

Education cultivate different philosophy of the way people see the world.: China focus on collectivism and obeying authority, U.S focus on individualism

Chinese feel stronger desire to fit in with peers, while Americans feel stronger desire to stand out. This connects to the fact that everyone in China uses WeChat, while U.S has many different payment systems.
