My academic success is defined as an acquisition of sound knowledge, engaging in sound education. Walden University has it. The staffs, faculty, Academic Advising are available to help with  tools like the library, recourses, academic skill center. Walden University provides that collaborative, supportive learning environment. Obtaining my MSN will foster my goal. Using my past experience and set skills critical thinking learned evidence based practice in collaboration with other disciplines thereby bring the positive social change (2013a) by incorporating my vast experience and skills sets. I would use persuasion. Nurses educate by persuasion, implementation, Assessment, monitoring for knowledge gained and positive outcome.(Walden 2010). This is a way to impact my company and by community and help shape my world one block at a time. While my learning outcome for the MSN is the continued “exhibition of ongoing commitment to professional development” (Walden University, 2013 para.3).

No man stands as an island. Networking with other professionals has helped me redefine my goals. I have learned that belonging to a professional group or association has many good benefits that motivate to seek higher levels of achievement. Also getting certification gives more knowledge power and you become an authorized expert in that specialty. To have a mentor and a go to opens numerous doors of opportunity and quick knowledge gain because you can never go wrong and that is the greatest resource I can have. Membership into professional association has great benefits. It is an open door for networking and building my referral base. Educational seminars could be the voice that implements laws, CEU’s. I belong to the National Association of Nigerian Nurses in North America. Texas Nurse’s Association. Professional networking is an authentic ways of building classmates, colleagues, friendship that are mutually beneficial and palatable. (2014). Professional Association membership is another way of knowledge sharing growth environment that can also be a means for social sharing.

“Walden Mission strives in student diverse community of career professional to transform to them to Scholar- Practitioner so that they can effect positive social change.” I had looked into other programs into other NP programs but found that Walden has a totally 100% online program. The timing means I would not leave the comfort of my home and my family to travel far. I could still be Mom to my children cook, clean and help with home-works and Doctor’s appointments. Attending the Walden online Program at completion will place me in the top tier of NPs to care for my community making me more critically applying the Evidence base concept for a good positive outcome.

I also worked with Dr jo in the Labor and delivery as an OBGYN nurses. She is a very detailed oriented Doctor. She loves her patient because she demands that without them there is no business. I know her work ethics. She loves to teach and wants a perfect outcome for her patient.  Thoroughness in her examination and her ability to answer  questions. She teaches prevention of postpartum psychosis and depression. She advocates for the mental health awareness of her patient. She has asked office to print me a copy of the prenatal teaching days and that I was welcome to attend any time. She also said her door was open to me to visit anytime. This relationship started when I was her scrub nurse during most cesarean section or caring for her patients in active delivery days. There are numerous academic resources available to me at Walden:

The Library: There are useful available library course that are scholarly materials for assignment help. In a disserved community like Walden the library is there 24/7 online tool for excellent success in my education. I must learn to use such help. Week 3 | Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below.

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

Part 1: Relationship between academic integrity and writing

Academic integrity connotes the level of honesty that I will seek to uphold in my coursework in MSN program. Specifically, academic integrity is achieved through submitting written work which meets the laid down criteria on accountable referencing in the process of training (Pope, Gore & Renfroe, 2013). Most institutions have rules which aim to improve integrity in academic work through punishing course writings which fail to attain the laid down standards. Academic integrity is a central aspect of student learning in MSN course since it serves as the foundational basis for ethical practice, accountability and professionalism in training. Additionally, integrity in academic writing enables for expansion of creativity in a learner through offering opportunity for further exploration of subject areas without any limitations from ideas presented by other authors (Billings & Halstead, 2016). In recent years, healthcare stakeholders have encouraged institutions to adhere to standards which encourage ethical conduct for students as a measure towards preparation for such learners to become responsible nurses upon completion of study (Nurse.com, 2015). Therefore, emphasis by the institution in relation to minimum standards in writing of MSN coursework is a positive gesture towards observing integrity of nursing professionals.

Relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics

It is also important to highlight that academic integrity prepares the learner to transition into an honest family nurse practitioner since it focuses on ethical behavior. As a family nursing practitioner, I will be expected to observe integrity of scholarly work and this forms a major part of professional ethics in practice. Writing in family nursing practice is relevant to professional practice in MSN in the sense that it helps in preparation towards team work and timeliness in achieving milestones. Under this, the practitioner is encouraged to complete scholarly work and to submit them for publication within the stipulated timelines which is a crucial step towards my training to become accountable as a nurse (Billings & Halstead, 2016). Besides, the need for accountability in writing is relevant to professional practice in MSN through developing important skills which may prove useful in scholarly writing while in practice. Therefore, my current training in MSN coursework which emphasizes the need for academic integrity in writing is a positive step forward towards preparation for integrity in scholarly writing as part of professional practice.

 

 

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

  1. As a student of MSN

In order to maintain the integrity and ethics of my work as a student, I intend to adopt the following key strategies: a) avoid plagiarism in my academic work. At the core of plagiarism is the usage of an author’s writing without acknowledgment of the source in a manner acceptable in writing (Pope, Gore & Renfroe, 2013). Therefore, observing plagiarism in my academic writing will enhance integrity and ethics of such a submission; and, b) timeliness in submission of assignments. This strategy is relevant to academic integrity in the sense that it will enhance my level of accountability hence high likelihood of better performance.

  1. As a nursing practitioner

On another end, the strategies which I will observe as a professional nurse include: a) publishing on new areas of public concern. This will be essential to my career as a nurse because it will enable me to address key issues affecting the public in the area of study in a prompt manner which boosts my professional credibility and ethical practice (Pope, Gore & Renfroe, 2013); and, b) Timeliness in publication of scholarly work will be relevant towards tapping into the interest of readers by showing a higher rate of professional accountability. Additionally, observing timelines and delivering milestones in a prompt manner will bolster the relationship between me as a family nursing professional and the publishers thereby creating opportunities for future engagements in my professional practice.

Approaches in identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research

The approach adopted in the identification of the peer-reviewed article included Assessment of authorship. Under this, I considered whether the research is done by an author, the credentials of the authors such as relevant qualifications or if they work in institutions like hospital or nursing center (Hamric et al., 2014). The second stage involved the consideration of purpose of the research. Specifically, my identification focused on key words like nursing within a specific region of Latin America. Additionally, I analyzed the scope of the research whether it is broad enough to discuss the topical area under study in a comprehensive manner. Therefore, assessment of the contents of the research to determine the extent to which it addresses the gap presented in the statement of problem formed a central focus of the identification and analytical process of the peer-reviewed research.

Effective strategies in finding peer-reviewed research

The strategies that I found effective in finding peer-reviewed research included the following: a) use of key words within the search engine of the journal website. This is essential in the sense that it helped in narrowing down the available articles in the chosen niche based on the words thereby making this strategy very effective (Hamric et al., 2014); b) use of authorship. Under this strategy is prior identification of the name of the author based on past publication in a given topical area before undertaking the search. This strategy is effective because of its ability to quickly narrow down the available publications from an author from which the researcher may prompt choose an article for analysis (Hamric et al., 2014). Additionally, authors could also be searched based on their credentials such as professional qualifications or institutions to which they are affiliated such as hospitals or related health facilities.

Resource for future peer-reviewed article research

An example of a resource which I found to be effective during my search for peer-reviewed articles is the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (OJIN, 2015). This website is resourceful because of its large base of peer-reviewed publication from qualified authors from different parts of the globe hence my recommendation for any future research in relation to peer-reviewed sources.
