I believe that the US Healthcare system should focus their attention more on health promotion and disease prevention. It has been proved that focusing on ones health by eating better and staying active is one sure way of improving your health in the long term, increases your lifespan and helps avoid high medical expenses in the future. The majority of people are re-actively instead of proactively and will only go to the doctor until they are sick and won’t take care of their body until problems start arising but by that time it might be too late. I believe that the focus on change has slowly been starting to be implemented by what I have seen in major companies and how they are encouraging their employees to start being active. Some companies are even offering bonuses for staying on top of your health but on the flip side some companies are increasing peoples insurance cost if they smoke for example. This is where I possibly see problems arising when people will complain about not being treated fairly and yet they don’t see that it benefits everyone if they just take care of themselves.

Roemer’s Model of Health service system is a 5 part model that includes major components of the system, their functions and their interdependencies: Organization of programs, Management (Planning, administration, regulation and legislation), Economic support (personnel households, charity, insurance, social security, government revenues and foreign aid), Production (trained workforce, availability of facilities, biomedical research and special care disorders) and Delivery of Health Services ( Primary care, secondary care, tertiary medical care and special disorders). With this model we can use it to compare other countries healthcare systems around the world since there are no two systems alike.
Our book talks about the medical model and the wellness model. In the medical model we are treating a diseases or when people are already sick mostly leading to having the system that we currently have in place and overloading the system. At this point you are putting all your efforts on treating the disease. In the wellness model we are focusing on preventing disease. By focusing more on the wellness model I believe that access and quality of health care would increase and costs would be lower because there wouldn’t be such an overload on the healthcare system by having to treat so many sick individuals. I believe that slowly the wellness model is starting to be put in place but ultimately its up to the people to change their lifestyle habits and that in itself is a tough thing to do.
