Integrating nursing theory and Florence nightingale theory to todays life. The purpose of this post is to better understand nursing theories and to determine how you can apply the Nightingale’s theory in practice.
• To better understand nursing theories, create a brief timeline of the history of nursing theory. (This can be in outline/bullet format)
• Choose one patient care problem (for example, adolescents at the end of life) and describe two ways you can apply Nightingale’s theory to the concept of environment.
• Here is a Nightingale background video that may be helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0FWqDlOYYs&t=2s
• View the trailer of An Inconvenient Truth (2:30 minutes), (Link clickable) which is a movie by former Vice President Al Gore. How can you use Nightingale’s theory to address this major environmental problem?
An Inconvenient Truth Trailer Video Transcript
Al Gore: If you look at the ten hottest years ever measured, they’ve all occurred in the last 14 years, and the hottest of all was 2005. Scientific consensus is that we are causing global warming. I am Al Gore, I used to be the next President of the United States of America. This it Patagonia 75 years ago, and the same glacier today. This is Mount Kilimanjaro 30 years ago and last year. Within the decade there will be no more snows of Kilimanjaro. This is really not a political issue so much as a moral issue, temperature increases are taking place all over the world and that’s causing stronger storms.
Speaker two: This is the biggest crisis in the history of this country.
Speaker three: Early this morning Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans.
Al Gore: Is it possible we should prepare against other threats besides terrorists?
Announcer: From Paramount Classics comes a film that has shocked audiences everywhere they’ve seen it.
Al Gore: The arctic is experiencing faster melting. If this were to go sea level worldwide would go up 20 feet. This is what would happen in Florida. Around Shanghai, home to 40 million people. The area around Calcutta, 60 million. Here’s Manhattan, the World Trade Center Memorial would be under water. Think of the impact of a couple hundred thousand refugees, and then imagine 100 million. We have to act together to solve this global crisis. Our ability to live is what is at stake.
Post should contain two to three paragraphs with three to four sentences per paragraph.

One patient care problem that can be addressed using Nightingale’s theory is the management of pain in patients. First, the physical environment of the patient’s room can be adjusted to promote comfort and relaxation, such as adjusting the lighting and temperature to the patient’s preference. Secondly, the psychological environment can be enhanced by creating a quiet and peaceful atmosphere to reduce stress and anxiety. By addressing these environmental factors, the patient’s overall comfort and pain management can be improved.
Regarding the major environmental problem of climate change, Nightingale’s theory can be used to address this issue by emphasizing the importance of a clean and healthy environment in promoting health and preventing illness. Nurses can advocate for environmentally-friendly practices in healthcare settings, such as reducing waste and using sustainable materials. They can also educate patients and their families about the impact of climate change on health and encourage them to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. By incorporating Nightingale’s environmental theory into nursing practice, nurses can play a crucial role in promoting a healthier environment and preventing the negative health consequences of climate change.
