MODULE 3 ASSIGNMENT

PURPOSE STATEMENT.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of social media use on mental health among adolescents.

BACKGROUND.
Social media platforms have become increasingly popular among adolescents, with 94% of 13-17 year-olds reporting using social media regularly (Pew Research Center, 2018). While social media has many benefits, such as staying connected with friends and family, it has also been linked to negative effects on mental health, including anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem (Liu & Ma, 2019). The constant comparison to others, exposure to cyberbullying, and the pressure to maintain a certain image online are all factors that can contribute to negative mental health outcomes (Best et al., 2014). Given the widespread use of social media among adolescents and the potential negative effects on mental health, it is important to investigate this relationship further.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS.
a. What is the association between social media use and anxiety symptoms among adolescents?
b. How does the frequency and duration of social media use impact depression symptoms among adolescents?
c. What is the relationship between social media use and self-esteem among adolescents?
d. Does the type of social media platform used (e.g., Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat) affect mental health outcomes among adolescents?

CONCEPTS/CONSTRUCTS.
a. Social media use is defined as the amount of time an individual spends on social media platforms, as well as the frequency and type of interactions they engage in (Kircaburun et al., 2019).
b. Anxiety symptoms are described as feelings of worry, nervousness, and unease that can be related to social situations, school, or personal relationships (National Institute of Mental Health, 2022).
c. Depression symptoms are defined as a persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest in activities that an individual used to enjoy (National Institute of Mental Health, 2022).
d. Self-esteem is described as an individual’s overall sense of self-worth and value (Trzesniewski et al., 2006).
e. Social comparison is a concept that refers to the tendency for individuals to compare themselves to others, especially on social media platforms (Vogel et al., 2014).
f. Cyberbullying is defined as the use of electronic communication to bully, harass, or intimidate another person, typically on social media platforms (Smith et al., 2008).
