Case Assignment
1. After reviewing the sustainability framework, identify and explain each of the domains and provide examples.
2. Explain how the domains work together to promote program sustainability in a community.
3. Select and explain the core competencies demonstrated by a public health professional as related to planning for program sustainability.

The sustainability framework consists of five domains: economic, environmental, social, political, and institutional.
Economic Domain: This domain deals with the financial aspects of sustainability and includes the resources, investments, and funding needed to maintain the program. For example, a community health program that provides access to clean water and sanitation must have a sustainable source of funding to ensure its continuation.

Environmental Domain: This domain addresses the impact of the program on the natural environment and the need to conserve resources. For example, a community gardening program must take into consideration the local water supply and soil quality to ensure the sustainability of the garden.

Social Domain: This domain considers the impact of the program on individuals and communities, including issues related to equity, access, and community engagement. For example, a community health program must ensure that its services are accessible to all members of the community, regardless of their income level.

Political Domain: This domain addresses the role of government and other stakeholders in promoting program sustainability, including the need for partnerships, advocacy, and policy development. For example, a community health program may need to engage local politicians and government agencies to secure funding and support for its services.

Institutional Domain: This domain focuses on the internal structures, systems, and processes that are necessary to maintain program sustainability, including the need for effective leadership, governance, and management. For example, a community health program must have strong internal systems and processes in place to ensure that its services are delivered in a consistent and reliable manner.

The five domains of the sustainability framework work together to promote program sustainability in a community. For example, a community health program that has strong financial resources, community engagement, and leadership will be better equipped to address challenges and ensure its long-term viability. The program must also consider the impact of its activities on the environment and address social equity concerns, while working with government and other stakeholders to secure funding and support.

The core competencies demonstrated by a public health professional as related to planning for program sustainability include:

Strategic Planning: The ability to develop a long-term vision and plan for the program, taking into consideration the five domains of the sustainability framework.

Financial Management: The ability to secure and manage resources, including funding and investments, to ensure program sustainability.

Community Engagement: The ability to engage with individuals and communities to build support for the program and address social equity concerns.

Leadership: The ability to lead and manage the program, including the development of effective governance structures and management systems.

Advocacy and Policy Development: The ability to engage with government and other stakeholders to promote program sustainability and secure funding and support.

Pprogram sustainability requires a comprehensive approach that considers the five domains of the sustainability framework. Public health professionals must demonstrate core competencies related to strategic planning, financial management, community engagement, leadership, and advocacy and policy development to ensure that programs are sustainable and have a positive impact on individuals and communities.
