One paradigm of health that is particularly relevant to this relationship is the bio-psycho-social model of health. This model posits that health is determined by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors (Engel, 1977). In the context of behavior and health, the bio-psycho-social model highlights the interplay between individual biology, psychological factors such as cognition and emotions, and social factors such as culture, economic status, and access to healthcare, in shaping health-related behaviors (Smedley & Syme, 2000).
For example, individual biology, such as genetics, can influence an individual’s risk of developing certain chronic diseases. However, this risk can be modified through behaviors such as diet and physical activity (WHO, 2020).
